Diabetic W/recent Kidney Problems Starving to Death...help! Posted: 07-20-06 13:45pm
3 months ago my obese and diabetic husband
was hospitalized because of severe edema,
including, scrotal edema and cellulitis
over most of his lower body. The
infection was treated in the hospital and
after his release, he was put on 40 mg,
lasix 1x daily and 1000mg pottasium 2x
daily, plus another diuretic as well 1x
daily. Due to a mix up with his dr's
staff, he was on this treatment for too
long. The main symptom resulting from
this was that he developed a terrible
salty/metalic taste in his mouth and
became unable to eat or drink anything.
After 2 or 3 weeks of this, he collapsed
and ended up in the hospital dehydrated.
The Dr. Said the cause of the problem was
that his kidneys had failed "briefly" and
the toxins were causing the foul taste.
We were told that after he was rehydrated,
if he continued to drink fluids, the
toxins causing the taste problem would
flush away and his taste would return
enabling him to eat again. I expressed
consern about nutrition and the doctor
glibbly told me he was still "fat enough"
for me not to worry! He hasn't eaten for
close to 3 months now, has lost over a
hundred pounds, and is weak and lethargic.
The taste is still so bad that every
attempt to eat or drink results in gagging
and vomiting, though he keeps trying to
force water down. The fool doctor
decided to refer him to a nutritionist
now! Something is very wrong and I hope
someone can give me a clue where to
look...Thyroid, kidney specialist,
diabetic, liver...Anything, before my
husband dies! I don't even know how to
classify this because so many things may
be involved. Please, please, please
someone help me!
