Q: What is Nerve Atrophy?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 16th, 2006
I have been having tired/weak legs, for about over 6 months. (I've had this before, but usually it only lasts a short while)

My legs varry from just general tired, to achy knees (almost all the time), tight muscles, and fasciculations (after walking or siting for a while)

I also feel very tired at times, mostly around the eyes/back of head/neck

I had a EMG & NCV(?). (i had both 18-24 months previous). The Neuro came back and said i had a Nerve Atrophy, and wants to do the tests again.

So my 'big' quesitons is:
What is Nerve Atrophy? (or what is it related to)
What causes it?
What 'fixes" it?

Nerve atrophy means that the nerve is dying. There might be many reasons for nerve damage and atrophy: spondylosis (discus hernia), toxins (alcohol), inflammations, endocrine disorders (diabetes), nutritive (lack of some vitamins) etc. Treatment depends upon the cause of atrphy. You can take all tests that are necessary for establishing a precise diagnosis with the neurologist.
