Q: O/t Notaries

Does anyone know about how much a notary charges to sign a marriage license?

Also - this will sound dumb, but - is it illegal or something for them to do it for free, or do they have to charge? (i'm asking cause I want to know if it's worth it to try to find someone I know or someone a friend knows to see if I can get it cheaper/free.)

I doubt it is illegal for them to sign without charging. I have friends who are notaries and they have always just signed my stuff whenever i've needed it.

As far as pricing them goes, ask at your court house on monday if it is open. ;)

congrats on the wedding.

It cost us $150. That also included payment for the 2 witnesses she provided for us since we were keeping it a secret. So I think it was either $100 or $125 just for her services.

Don't you have someone yet? I read that you're getting married on tuesday so I figured you would've already set something up with someone.

Congrats on your wedding!

Are you sure you're going to be able to find someone for tuesday? I'm only asking because it's a holiday. We set ours up like a week in advance but we could've probably set it up that day since we just went to her house and passed on the ceremony part.

Did you find a dress?

We just need someone to sign.
My mom is making me something to wear, but I as of yet have no idea what it is. Lol. We're going to do our own ceremony.

Most banks notarize for free, and the courthouse will do it for free too, atleast where I live they do.

I am going to become a notary in the fall. The girl i'm going with is renewing her certificate and she only charges like 20 dollars to ppl she doesn't know.

I think it's different in every state. We weren't allowed to just get it notarized at the bank. The woman we used actually had to ask us each if we wanted to marry the other and we had to have 2 witnesses to sign as well. Then she filed it at the town hall and I picked up a copy of our marriage certificate the next week. It was more of a production than we thought it would be.

That's kind of backward from what we're doing. We've already filed for the license. We just fill out our information, then we have to wait 24 hours to actually pick up the license... Then we just keep it until we get married, and it gets signed then.

That's what we had to do too. Well actually we got our license right when we applied for it. Then a couple weeks later we found a notary and she signed it and the witnesses signed it and then she had to file it with the town hall so we could get our marriage certificate. We got married on a saturday and she filed it on the following monday and I could've picked it up that day, so it was very prompt. Maybe it's different everywhere but I thought whoever signs it has to officially file it so you can get your certificate.

I don't know... But i'm not really concerned about whether or not it has to be filed or whatever. All I want is to make sure that july 4 is our wedding date. I know there are weird things you have to go through in some states, but i'm not sure about here. Like, some places you have to have blood tests done first. Not here.

Actually, now that I think about it, I don't believe there is a filing period afterward. John's sister and her now-husband came here to get married because it was so straightforward. All they had to do was stay here for 24 hours (the waiting period between when you apply for the marriage license and when you can pick it up), and that was it.

Oh well, we'll see. Lol
