Q: Do I have PCOS or is Bleeding caused by Increased Prolactin
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 30th, 2006
I had a miscarriage in december 2005 at 13 weeks,it was my first pregnancy and i got pregnant on the first try. Since my m/c i don't ovulate every month and it's causing my every other cycle to be irregular.I had couple of scans done when i was pregnant and my ovaries, womb and womb neck were all fine. I had my hormones checked and everything was fine except prolactine which was higher than it should be. Im in UK so don't know how much these numbers will help youbut my levels are 582 and they should be around 300. My dr. says he wont put me on any medication unless it's in thousands, and he wants to repeat the test.
I would like to try for a baby soon but at thir rate i don't think it's gonna happen any time soon.
When i don't ovulate i spot for about 3 weeks,no blood just light brownish spotting, then after a week it gets heavier but it's dark brown still no red-blood,when spotting stops i ovulate few days after that and 2 weeks after ovulation i get a normal period, then 2 weeks after first day of my last period i dont ouvlate and start spotting again and it just goes round and round ..it's neverending.

Do you think all this could be caused by prolactin levels? is it possible for me to hve PCOS,even though there was nothing just 6-7 months ago..AND MY OTHER HORMONES ARE OK (estradol, fsh, thyroid, testostorone etc etc)

what do you recommend? i am doing hormones test again in few eeks time and my doctor gave me progesterone in case i start spotting again on holiday.

thanks!

It is possible that increased prolactin levels have caused the ovulation and menstrual disturbances you describe. It doesn't seem likely that you have PCOS because symptoms include hormonal disturbances (increased LH: FSH ratio, increased testosterone and DHEA, decreased or no progesterone), obesity, fibrousness, rare (or lack of) menstruation AND an ultrasound report that indicate multiple cysts in the ovaries and small uterus. I recommend you, instead, that you request a CT-scan for a visualization of the pituitary gland.
