Q: Heart Sounds?!?

If I inhale deeply and press relatively hard against the spot
where the 5th or 6th rib meets the breastbone after exercise,
i can actually hear a loud swooshing noise coming from the area that's
in time with my heartbeat. As you might expect i'm really worrying over this; i've suffered from anxiety for a long time especially related to worrying about my heart. I'm sure you shouldn't be able to
hear your own heartbeat without putting your ear against your chest right?

Please, can anyone tell me what this might be?
One site suggested it might be caused by a hole in the heart which had me panicing a hell of a lot, and another suggested inhaling deeply simply amplified the heart sounds...Anyone ever had anything like this?
I don't think it's a heart murmur because i've had several physical check ups an ecg/ekg and a chest x-ray in the past 18 months related to my anxiety which all proved normal...Any idea???

well I have never heard of somthing like this.. But have you gone to the doctor for this specific problem? And im wondering why you press on your chest... Is there pain there that makes you press on it? I suggest seeing a doctor, it wouldnt hurt. Good luck

Well, thanks for your reply, I will see a doctor in the next few days.
I was pressing on my chest to see if it would have any effect on my heartbeat whilst I breathed in (i'm always worrying about that kind of thing so am always checking things like this  ).

I would certainly get it checked out. But even so, I think it may just be anxiety. I had a squeezing pain in my chest for three weeks and I got an ekg and everything was fine. I was told it might be anxiety. So I decided to simplify things and relax more. The squeezing pain went away. I think you may be making you heart hurt more by worrying about it so much. And be careful where you search on the internet, because I did that too and it can scare you unnecessarily.I use that site for my health concerns. Its pretty good.

But seriously, don't rule on anxiety, and don't press your chest if it doesnt hurt, just to see if it will. You're only making yourself more nervous.

From my experience, I can both hear and feel my heart pounding in my chest after hard, physical exercise. Or, even in my ears. I interpret this as a good sign...It i'm feeling over anxious, I also look at my intake of caffeine...How many cups of coffee did I have...And I drink camomille to calm down.

I hope that helps!

Thanks for your replies.
I went to the doctor today and he said everything was fine (clear chest sounds and no audible murmurs). The only problem was that I had a very fast pulse (caused by anxiety about visiting the doctor).
The sound definately comes from my chest as other people can hear it if I reproduce it in a quiet room.
So if their was no evidence of a murmur what could the sound be?
Should I see a cardiologist?
