Q: Discomfort in Back of the Throat for 2 Years!
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 29th, 2006
For the past two years the back left side of my throat has never felt normal, and for weeks or even months at a time it aches so much as to be quite painful. Swallowing is never uncomfortable; the pain seems to be mainly in the vicinity of the left adenoid or possibly the left tonsil and sometimes is accompanied by a lot of left side post-nasal drip.

Each time I visit the ENT doctor, he sees nothing to diagnose. An MRI also revealed nothing abnormal. Some different antibiotics have been tried, but have never helped at all. Gargling with Listerine or injecting a saltwater solution in my left nostril can at times provide some immediate relief, but the pain never completely goes away.

Can the tonsil have a malignancy that the doctors can't see? Should I get it removed?

I recommend you ask for a second opinion from another ENT-specialist. Something must first be diseased before it is removed from the body! If there is nothing wrong, then you can consider asking help from a psychiatrist or other mental health professional.
