Q: Husband has lost his Desire for Sex..is it Me or his Conditi
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 29th, 2006
My husband is 33 and was diagnosed with bipolar 3 years ago. Recently he had a major low and ended up in the hospital for severe depression, suicidal thoughts and psychotic episodes (he hears and see things that aren't there and thinks the mormons are out to kill him). He is currently on 1mg of Risperdal at bedtime and 300mg of Lithium 3 times a day. He has been on these medications for approximately one month. My question is, we have always had an active sex life but recently he doesn't seem to want anything to do with me. There is very little physical contact, an occasional kiss, and NO sex. Is it the medication or is it me or is it the bipolar?

Bipolar Disorder Answer A1181
It doesn't seem that you are the problem! Bipolar disorder is a severe mood disorder that requires lifelong treatment. Depression is a major characteristic of bipolar disorder. Depression affects the motive-emotional life. Sexual desire and pleasure is part of that aspect, so it is not surprising that your husband has lost the desire for sex. You can seek advice from the specialists who have diagnosed and are treating him.
