Q: Quetion About My Situation

I had a potentially very risky sexual encounter in early february of 2006. I am not very sexually active and I have been very worried about this incident since. About two weeks later I got a feeling of feverishness. Later on I would get occasional swollen glands under the arms but mostly in the neck. When I went to the doctor I was tested and found to have a new and active epstein barr infection (they ran a dual test of some sort). The level of infection was high also as per the test. They tested me again for ebv a month later and the level of the infection had fallen somewhat. I have had the following hiv tests since the incident:

7 week - elisa - negative
11 week - elisa - negative
11 week - western blot - negative
12 week - pcr proviral dna - negative
18 week - oraquick antibody test - negative
19 week - elisa (hiv-1 & 2) - negative
19.5 week - pcr proviral dna - negative

the reason I keep testing is that I still feel bad even after 4.5 months since the incident. I have not had sexual relations since the incident.

I always have minor hair follicle acne in my arms which I have always popped. Generally they heal and go away after a few days. Recently the little scabs got extremely angry and turned into larger sores. When they healed after a week they left discolored areas on my forearm, somewhat pinkish. I also have a few very odd oval shaped sores with a small round center. These are very strange because they have caused the tissue surrounding hem to turn a purple-brown color.

I am extremely worried that I might be a late sero-converter from what I read on line. Is ther anything more I can do to determine my status? I am very worried over this and don't feel well at all.

Thank you in advance for any information,

ron

Hiv
Though you don't specify the activity that you engaged in (which would have been helpful), you numerous tests are conclusive.
Ask yourself this - if you doubt the accuracy of the tests, why did you take them?

I doubt them because I have continued strong symptoms of illness after an unprotected sexual encounter. People say to believe the tests but what if you feel extremely bad and all the tests can't find a thing? You at lest know your own body....

Tests
Well, i'm sorry to say, people don't know their own body that well. Sure, you can feel things that others cannot know about, but sadly we are not able to determine the cause in many cases. That's why we have tests for medical conditions. Your numerous tests are based on a vigorously developed science which is designed to detect hiv antibodies - these are produced by your body. If there are no antibodies, then the test will be negative.

So...

If you are experiencing symptoms of hiv, then antibodies will be present. The tests didn't find any, so that means that there aren't any. And that means that you don't have hiv.

It is only within the first three months that there can be any doubt over a test because that is the maximum known time for someone to not produce the antibodies - and during that time (before the body seroconverts and produces antibodies) they will have experienced no symptoms yet.
