My dad suffered a major stroke 6 weeks ago at the age of 59. He has paralysis down one side but luckily his speech isn't effected and his left side seems okay! He is very depressed and although the doctors have prescribed anti-depressants myself and other family members are casting about madly to find something to give him a bit of positivity and motivation. He is desperate to walk again, but it is very early stages and he is still in hospital working with his physio on standing and sitting etc.
Apart from any bits of advice or experience with this situation being greatly appreciated at this time, I am really, really keen to hear from anyone that has got back to walking after a major stroke and has been able to play sports again, our dad is a super dedicated crown green bowler and it's the big love of his life and what he's desperate to be able to stand for!!!

My husband is 58 and suffered a massive stroke oct, 2005. He now walks with a quad cane, but has no use of his left arm.

He too is on anti depressants, but his attitude has been so good through out this entire thing.

It takes alot out of the family to keep him up, but is so well worth it.

Do not lose hope!

Pain
Yes, my husband has alot of pain in his left arm. Even though he too can not move it. They have him on tylenol 3 for the pain, which seems to take the pain away.

Stroke is so very different in every person. I have read and read on stroke. I have come to the realization, it takes time to heal.

When my husband suffered his stroke, they had to remove a flap from his skull to let the brain swell. He wore a rubberized helmet for 6 weeks. Then they replaced the flap.

My husband has now been taken off trazadone and he just takes paxil.

Does your dad have his arm in a sling? My husband wears a sling when ever I move him, to make sure the arm does not drop. When he is sitting I take it off. Sometimes too I find if you rearrange the arm the pain may go away.

It took months before they could even work on his arm it hurt him so bad.

Never lose hope.....................................
