Can an Abnormal Pap Smear develop into Cervical Cancer after
Posted: 06-28-06 20:10pm

When I was 5 months pregnant with my daughter I found out I had hpv. All the sudden after that diagnosis I started seeing the warts which I still have. My ob doctor then told me I had abnormal cells. They said it was just slightly abnormal. I havnt been able to go back to get the colposcopy done that they want me to have because I have no insurance. Its been about a year now. I will have insurance next month and will get this taken care of. My problem is im scared to death they are going to tell me it grew into cervical cancer and theres nothing I can do about it now. Im scared to death and this is all I think of. Is it possible it could have turned into cancer and spread by now?

It depends on how “slightly abnormal” your Pap-report was in order to estimate cancer development of the cervix. An abnormal cytological report from the Pap-test includes terms such as: 1. Atypical squamous cells (of undetermined significance (ASC-US) and cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H)); 2. Low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL); 3. High grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), and 4. Squamous cell carcinoma.
If I suppose if we translate “slightly abnormal” to read, in fact, “low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL)” then there is only a small possibility for transformation in to a cancer. I recommend you follow up with another Pap-test and colposcopy as soon as possible.
