Raskolnikov the Hypoglycemic! Posted: 06-27-06 08:31am
Okay, this has nothing to do with anything
really and is more of a fun post. Has
anyone read crime and punishment?
Reading it, I find that the main
character, raskolnikov, is clearly
hypoglycemic. Just listen to this
sampling from the end of the first
chapter:
(he was just thinking about mur dering a
pawn broker during this part)
he sat down at a sticky little table in a
dark and dirty corner; ordered some beer,
and eagerly drank off the first glassful.
At once he felt easier; and his thoughts
became clear.
"all that's nonsense," he said hopefully,
"and there is nothing in it at all to
worry about! It's simply physical
derangement. Just a glass of beer, a
piece of dry bread - and in one moment the
brain is stronger, the mind is clearer and
the will is firm! Phew, how utterly
petty it all is!"

I never read the book but that is
interesting. It definitely points to the
possibility he's hypoglycemic.
You know, I read a book a long time ago by
carl fredricks that some hypoglycemics,
untreated, had the propensity to commit
homicide. Just thought you might want to
know. :)

Hhaha, yeah, I can see that, i've actually
heard some doctors argue that a large
number of crimes are likely committed
during moments of low blood sugar. Hard
to argue, however. I've also noticed
that a number of russian novels feature
depressed or manic character who's
symptoms and experiences are so similiar
to hypoglycemics everywhere that I find a
lot more support for the theory that
russia is depressed because its people eat
too many carbohydrates.

Yeah, I believe there was a study done
where murderers were tested for
hypoglycemia and a large percentage were.
:0
that's an interesting theory about the
russian diet and depression. I'm sure
there's some truth to it. I wonder if
you can do a study on that. Like put
everyone in a small town on a diet and see
what the effects are in terms of blood
sugar levels.

Honestly, I can tell you that's when my
troubles began, looking back. You lose
weight on it, but I was tired all the
time, sleeping a total of maybe 12 hours
per day, including naps. Very high
carbohydrates all the time, usually
potatoes, rice, and beets being the
highest as well as heavy duty bread and
meat pies. Lots of bread stuff.
