Q: Colic Or Just Fussy?

I have an 11 day old baby girl. She has cried every night for hours at a time since we brought her home. The Dr. Changed her formula to allimentum and said for me to give her milocon drops in every bottle. That was last tuesday and while I have noticed some improvement, she is still very fussy. I can hear bubbles in her tummy. She is eating 2-3 oz every 2-4 hours depending on her.Do you think I should try gripe water? Sometimes the only way to stop her crying is to feed her even if she just ate 1 1/2 hours ago. Do you think i'm overfeeding her or does this just sound like gas? I read that colic usually doesn't start until about 3 weeks of age. Is it too soon for her to be classified as colic?

Does she bring up wind after her feed? If not then that is probably what is causeing the problem. Gripe water works brilliantlly when they have trapped wind it just relaxes them enough to actually get it out, a bath can work good to but thats not very practical in the middle of the night :-). I don't know much about colic so I really cant help you there sorry.
Also you can't really over feed a baby they will only drink if they are hungry and if the do guts them selves they usually bring it back up again (what a mess!) good luck and sorry I couldn't be much help.

She passes gas periodically during the day, not specificly after a feed. My husband did get some gripe water yesterday adn I gave her some in her bottle. I'm not sure if it is working yet though because she cried from about 9:30 last night until about 12. She may just be a fussy baby. I hope it doesnt last forever. It makes me feel so helpless when she is crying and there is nothing I can do. She is inconsolable. I try rocking patting, singing, just about everything. Sometimes it works but most of the time it doesnt. Thanks for your advice!

Honestly I read that feeing a baby whenever it cries is a really bad habit to get into. Food becomes the only comfort and that can lead to weight issues down the road. I am going through a similair thing with my son, and I have come to the conclusion that babies are babies and crying is just what they do. If youve already switched her to alimentum and are giving her gas drops there isnt much else you can do. If you dont have a swing, I suggest getting one, they are a miracle to have. My son loves his swing, its the only thing that calms him down. I am hearing that the crying episodes will pass usually by 4 months...

Have you tried a pacifiyer they are handy sometimes as long as they aren't over used. Try giving her the gripewater in a small syringe or teaspoon if she will take it, I found that it worked better that way, but everyone is different. Other than that have a chat to your doctor or midwife they may have some other suggestions.

Make sure oyu burp her well after every feeding. When my son was newborn he was eating every hour or so and I thought i'd go crazy but I made it through and he;s not obese and does not need a bottle for comfort.

Gripe water did help with my son too but igave it to him from a dropper not mixed in with the breast milk or formula.

Your daughter might just have colic too. Good luck!!
