Q: What Do I Eat When ...

I have a stomach virus?

Huh, stan? :)

anybody? :|

it appears I have a stomach virus -- went around the office -- oh, the joy! I'm nauseous when I eat - eggs, turkey, chicken, tuna, meat, fruit. I've only managed to eat almonds and tea and to pieces of a whole grain bread with cranberries and pumkin seeds in it. Of course, my hypoglycemia wants more food (probably protein) and i'm starting to feel anxious.

Any suggestions?

I use a product called "candicin" by genestra, which is made of ginger, clover oil, and other products, and it is great against nausea. It kills bad bacteria, and I use it along with probiotics when I feel sick. It relives the nausea and in hours I feel better.

As for eating, I usually try not to eat to much if I have too much nausea, only slices of an apple each 2-3 hours at most. Even if you feel weak, the next day should be better I guess...

Man that sucks. Hmmm, well, the brewer's yeast will help. Perhaps you should try drinking a glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice mixed with water. That may do the trick. I'm afraid of this as well, I realized after looking around that the majority of medicines out there, for whatever, have sugar in them! Seriously, what the hell?

There is another product which I use (well I used... Not anymore because there is some interaction between grapefruit and my ssri med). It is called "citrus" and is a powerful lemon or grapefruit extract. It is excellent against gastro... Or the tourista. Or whatever the intestinal problem. This is miraculous. But use it with probiotics, to be sure to replenish your intestinal flora.

Babouin: thanks for your suggestion. I definitely need to kill whatever it is I have, the candicin sounds good, but I can't just eat apples. I need protein. Right now, I become anxious without the protein, especially when I don't feel well.

Stan: I tried the brewer's yeast this morning ... No go ... I'm sparing you the details. Lemon water and fresh mint tea helps to settle my stomach but just the idea of eating meat or eggs just nauseates me. The over-the counter stuff is just not good. I finally did force myself to eat some eggs earlier and although my stomach hurts -- it's better than feeling anxious. I just want protein - any protein that my body would accept right now.

it's tough to be at work like this. All I have is my usual "menu" because I didn't have time to make something better suited for my "situation". I need to devise a "back-up plan".

Hi,

when I have an upset stomach or a cold I make some chicken soup. It has protein and is easy on the digestion. I use some low glycemic vegetables and the broth is good even if you don't eat the chicken at first. I freeze some in individual portions and just warm up when you need it. Yogurt is another food that is gentle and gets the good bacteria back in your system.

Hi diana,

chicken soup would be perfect. Thanks for the tip on freezing it. That's exactly what I need to do in these instances.

Sorry about the brewer's yeast! That sucks. Try the suggestions they gave and see what happens. I don't know, but maybe try a bit of cayenne pepper? I've heard that can do good, but I don't want you to vomit or anything.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Chicken soup was what helped.

Yesterday, I quickly realized that while a stomach virus is never fun, it's especially challenging for hypoglycemics. I mean, really, what do you eat?!

Diana's suggestion to freeze chicken soup is great. This led me to think, what about the instances, like mine, were you didn't have time to make chicken soup and you have none in the freezer? So, last night, I strolled down the soup aisle in the supermarket looking for chicken broth or chicken stock that didn't have any hidden sugars in them.

Here's what I found:

swanson chicken broth has molasses.
Knorr's chicken stock has dextrose.
Healthful organic chicken stock has honey.
Only 1 - nature's promise chicken broth was free of hidden sugars.

I'll have to look into that, i've been thinking about making some soup someday. Be careful of even that, they hide in sometimes in the form of stuff like evaporated celery juice and stuff like that, that's all sugar. I dreaded the thought of an illness like that. Actually, one day, I had what I think may have been the stomach flu for a day or so, but it was probably just the hypoglycemia. It was several weeks ago, I could hardly eat anything, but I knew I had to so I was like screw it and forced it down. I almost vomited several times and could hardly sleep that night. It may have been bacteria from chicken I left out, that's more likely, but yeah, I agree, what can we eat? More importantly, what can we take for illness should it occur? We need a post about this.

I think this is a great idea, stan. I find that I resort to the natural approach with herbs and home remedies when i'm sick.

Normally, I would have made white rice with olive oil to settle my stomach. (growing up -- olive oil was the cure all for everything;)

but now I can't have the white rice -- I was afraid brown was too fiberous, for lack of a better term, and make matters worse.

As for homeopathic medicines, many have sugar in them. I find I can tolerate tinctures even though many have an alcoholic base. But I only use it as my "last resort". My homeopathic doctor says most hypoglycemics can tolerate the tinctures because you're taking such a small amount. But, as you know, there are always a few who can't.

Certainly. I've made a new thread so we can discuss illnesses and treatments hypoglycemics can use. Cayenne pepper is a good one, I like to drink that stuff down.

Actually, ugh, just to check I looked and it states that it is known to have a blood sugar lowering action, though not exciting the pancreas it can lower the sugar by itself. What can we take? Jeez.

Cayenne pepper lowers blood sugar? How much would you have to take for that to happen, I wonder?

Have you ever heard of the master cleanse? (the ceyenne pepper made me think of it). People fast on water, lemon juice, ceyenne pepper and organic maple syrup for a minimum of ten days. It's supposed to cleanse the system. They say it's ok for diabetics to do because "all your nutrients you need" come from this concoction. Personally, I would be sprawled out on the floor on day one :)

Yeah, it certainly does, I just found out! Haahaah, wasn't that bad though, I wanted to test it. It really does. Not like if you ate something bad, but you can tell. Never heard of that.
