This is embarrassing. I've been smoking for 9 years now. I've tried quitting on several occasions. Everytime I try to quit I get really bad constipation. I actually use cigarettes sometimes to help me use the bathroom. I was just wondering if anyone else had problems with constipation when they have tried to quit smoking? I really want to quit, and have set a date for next week. I am just worried about the constipation again. It's very annoying. I have heard that it will pass in a few days but it might take a few weeks. Any insight would be helpful.

Hello,
I also am trying to quit and just recently have I cut down a lot (from about a pack a day to about four a day) and i've been facing constipation as well. I'm guessing its normal. The best thing i've found to do is use a stool softener (laxitives don't work for me).

Hello,
I am smokin for almost 4 years.I usually smoke 5 times a day.It really harms me,I am trying to quit smoking as soon as possible . I think the best way to quit smoking is the strong will power. it can't be removed by some special treatment.Only that person can help himself about it

smoking and constipation
i smoke and every morning when i get my first smoke is when i defficate so i really think there is something in these smokes that helps to do this.. there r so many chemicals in ciggs, i mean ones that make no sense other than to addict us and keep us slaves, so who knows? , other than the rj renolds scientists?ive tried to quit a few times unsuccessfully and had to use stool softeners, ive done all kinds of laxatives and find that magnessium citrate works but , i prefer the stool softeners bc they dont make my stomach cramp up. I wish you good health, wealth and luck...

i thought it was just me and people used to think i was nuts. I wanted so badly to stop smoking and i just could not go to the toilet.
I already use stool softeners as my morphine causes real bad constipation but still need that cigarette in the morning to help me go.

Never quit 'Quit Smoking'
I was actually quite worried about my constipation. It has been bothering me for months now and starting last week that it got really worse. I started to link up the relation between quitting smoking and constipation until I found these confirmations from you. I have quit smoking for 5 months now and will never give in for a solution to constipation. I guess I just have to drink a lot more water and eat more fiber-rich foods. I never had constipation before and after I picked smoking unless I ate lots of chili. Therefore I strongly believe my body will be tuned back to normal one day.

Yes, that is right, fluids and that Lemon juice, those works really nice. And try not to eat dry foods, at least there must be soup in your meal at least. You see, fluids helps soften the fecal matter.

With the introduction of smoking alternatives, for those chain smokers who are not mentally prepared to even gradually withdraw their smoking urges, This new concepts will play a major role to the beginning of the end of nicotine contamination.

COFFEE is a laxative!
I also have recently stopped smoking. I find drinking 2 or 3 cups of coffee helps gets things going. Usually after 1 or 2 hours after drinking "things" will work "themselves" out.

The pitfall is that most literature on quitting says just the opposite - stay away from caffeine an other things that make you want to light up. If you're strong enough to handle coffee without a smoke - try it out. And hey, you'll be very productive for 3-4 hours!

I too become constipated when I give up smoking, and as I fall on and off the wagon every few months it seems, my poor tummy doesn't know what's going on!

I already eat lots of veggies and fibre rich food, so I find the best thing is to buy some psyllium husk powder (sold as Regucol in Holland & Barrett UK), and take as advised, twice daily. Mixed with water it's pretty horrible but it does the job without any chemical laxative effect. It's just powdered fibre basically so harmless.

Also, treat yourself to a massive 2L bottle of your fave mineral water every day, and drink every drop on top of your normal tea or coffee.

Constipation should go away after a couple of days of this, but keep up the fibre/water regime for a couple of weeks till your body gets used to the natural way.

I am an otherwise healthy 34 year old male who recently kicked a 22 year pack a day habit (Yes my math is correct I'm afraid.). I used to kid people that you could set your watch by my BM's, 0830 every morning after my 3rd smoke and sometimes again at 2 pm daily. In the last 2 weeks i have gone only twice and both times with the assistance of a stool softener/ stimulant! I have for years and continue to start each day with more than 40 oz. of coffee and have even increased my caffeine intake beyond that in the last few weeks with no results in the bathroom. I suppose if you weren't also a coffee addict then increasing your intake MIGHT lead to some relief to constipation. Unfortunately if you are like me extra caffeine isn't going to do it alone.
I think I will try some Metamucel or something, yuck!
Oh, and what is with the gas, my goodness?!

I am also having the same problem, only i have cut down my coffee intake also because my sense of taste has gone all to pot since quitting. Everything tastes vile. I am currently pregnant and even though the lack of nicotine doesnt seem to be bothering me i am suffering caffeine withdrawl painful headaches which are causing blurred vision etc and so much pain as i cant go to the toilet. Sad not a very good scenario at almost 24 weeks pregnant and unable to take anything.

I quit smoking almost 2 months ago, and the bloating and constipation have been horrorshow...so unpredictable. I think it has something to do with the air we took in when smoking helping to "fill us up inside"...not sure. But, I will not, under any circumstances, introduce cigarettes to my body again, just to be able to go regularly. I eat dried dates for breakfast at work every morning, and some results occur by 10 a.m. I'm thinking about trying some of the fiber supplements I read about above. Thanks!

constipation and smoking
As for coffee helping me poo , it doesnt work for me. Though it doesnt make me feel like a cig. I have really bad constipation and cramps, i have passed small amount of crap but it is really watery, I think i cant poo due to the bowel function slowing, not because of overly hard or dry poo.
As for saying i will never smoke again, i think this is a mistake. I have been caught out too many times. The statement of "NEVER AGAIN" shouldnt be used as nothing is certain and if you do start again it makes you feel crap for being wrong and makes it harder to quit again due to the increased feeling of falure. Just smile and try again!!

Constipation due to stopping tobacco
I stopped tobacco 2 months ago, after 30+ years. I had no idea I'd be in for this problem.

Pains in my back from not being able to "go". I tried flooding my system like I was going in for a colonoscopy, and that didn't even work. I've tried metamucil, I have tried laxatives like immodium, nothing has worked.

I have a naturally very high fiber diet, plus drink at least 75+ ounces of water daily, exercise a lot, and even drink a good amount of coffee.

Today I tried a stool softener. So far nothing, but it's only been a couple of hours.

I'm not returning to tobacco, but this problem needs to be resolved.

Immodium is NOT a laxative! It is just the OPPOSITE! It numbs the bowels!

I quit smoking and now im highly and overly constipated :'( i look pregnant and have dome lots of teas and other things... The tea always always worked for me when i did smoke. And it worked like a charm i never had trouble. Now ALL i do is the tea everynight and STILL does not work! Im thinkimg about having a cig to get things going and start working out. People can die from being comstipAted ;( i get constipated for maybe over three freeking months!! The best bet is to just have 1 cig a day to help me go, seeing as i dont have the addictive trait anymore so i think its best just to smoke. I am VERY VERY SCARED!! NOTHING IS WORKING!!!!! NOT EVEN ALCOHOL!! :'''((((((((((((

I've quit smoking before, and gained alot of weight. I am really concerned about it, so i'll make sure not to happen again. I think as smokers we took the wasy way of not caring, and now it's hard to get back. As for constipation, i will eat only salads ,fruits and vegetables untill i am back to normal. Also i take tea, chineese and green tea, i go out when least expect it since it's only've been a few days, but i will manage to time it so that i dont have to stay in the house (when it comes, it comes with this tea!).
So with no bread, pasta, cheese, fried foods, pastry, olives and other constipating foods i am sure i will be able to get fit and a have exercise to get my bowels moving.
I'm sure every non smoker needs this stuff to stay fit too, so smoking was just a dangerous shortcut to being fit without the effort.
