Q: Low-dose Birth Control Problems

Hello everyone!

I'm having some birth control problems and I hope someone can help!

I began taking orthotricyclen when I was 18 (i'm 22 now). It worked fine for me, but when ortho-lo came out my gyno wanted me to try it. So I did, and I really didn't have any side effects other than bleeding during sex that occurred the week before my period. I never really gave it much thought since it was always right before my period. But I mentioned it to him at my next appointment so he switched me back to trinessa (generic form of orthotricyclen).

After being on trinessa for a while I came down with anxiety/depression and thought it was the pill so I asked my gyno to switch me to see if that would help. So currently i'm on yasmin, my 2nd month. I also was prescribed lexapro by my family doc for anxiety/depression, which has improved. However, this past week (7 days before my period) I bled a little during sex again! This hasn't happened since I was on ortho lo so i'm just wondering if maybe I need to go back to a higher dose pill? What do you think?

I'm really worried but I keep telling myself it only happens at that certain time of the month so it must be related to the pill. All of my paps have always been normal. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Sex in many women can cause some bleeding and spotting, soemtimes from the cervix. It could be related to your pill, but it could also be fdrom sex.

Doesn't it seem strange though that the only time it happens is the week before my period? And only when i've been on ortho lo or yasmin?

This something I can advise on, but it could be related to a pill. If one pill worked betetr for you, then you need to go back on it.

I called my gyno yesterday. He said I have not been on yasmin long enough to determine whether or not that pill is ok for me. So I guess that just means if it happens again next month he'll switch me. I guess he wasn't worried so I shouldn't be either???

This is nothing to worry about, I promise you won't bleed to death! As long as it is not pad filling blood every 2hours you are okay!

Most women do have unusual bleeding with birth control, for at least the first few months anyway...

I had an iud, mirena..I had it for 1.5 years..Bled everyday.. I wanted the hormone free one, but got the hormonal one instead because it was available =) I wanted to see if it would ever 'mesh nicely' with ym body, well it obviously did not..I now have a copper iud, which is hormone free..No spotting or bleeding, and I am fine...

The moral is it is annoying! It sucks, but it will not kill you, and it is nothing to be worried about...
