Hello,
i'm writing because i'm scared and am
hoping for answers or at least talk with
someone who's gone through this before.
I'm 19 years old and had a small retina
detatchment after falling while
cheerleading. I was always really
nearsighted (-12) and my opthamologist
checks my retina often. Now I can't
cheerlead anymore and I don't feel like my
opthamologist is helping me much or
answering my questions. Can I go blind
with this?! What can happen now? Please
help!

Detached Retina Posted: 06-28-06 12:01pm
My brother was 19 when he detached both
his retinas while jumping off the cliffs
in virginia into water with his buddies.
He also had -12 at the time in his left
eye. His right was a -11 but he was taken
in for surgery and they attached both
retinas. After a week of healing only the
right eye stayed attached, they had to go
and give him a glass eye for the left eye.
Unfortunately, retinal detachment is
fairly common with really high myopia, or
so we are told by our doctors. They tell
us no activities that could cause a change
of pressure in the eye such as sky diving,
bunji jumping, bull riding, ect. Even hit
to the head can cause your vetreal to
detatch and they can't fix that. I'm not
saying your life is over but you do have
to limit your activities ( at least the
extreme ones) it's not so bad, my brother
is now 35 and he works and has a full life
so be careful and try not to worry.
