Retrobulbar Optic Neurities
Posted: 06-18-06 16:30pm

Back in mar. '06 I was diagnosed with optic neuritis in both eyes. I had an mri, but nothing was apparent except the radiologist reported noted a possibility of acute sinusities (i didn't find this out until june '06). I've been through steroid iv and oral treatments and have been well (with my vision returning completely) until two months later.

In june '06 I was diagnosed with retrobulbar optic neuritis in my left eye (with 5% vision loss). After going through the steroid treatments, again, the pain has reoccurred, again--to no assistance from steroids nor the pain killers. I have no symptoms of ms or glaucoma (after several trips back and forth to the opthamologist and neurologist). I have recently seen an ent (ear, nose, and throat doctor) as soon as I found out what my mri report said. He ordered a ct-scan and am waiting for that report. I have no other health problems, no history in my family of diseases that are related to this problem.

Now, back in january and february I did have two colds--the one in february lasted longer than a week. Since then, I haven't been able to breathe comfortable through my left sinus. Could there be a possible infection?

Any assistance would be appreciative. Please email me: toad78@ne tzero.Net

thank you.

Optic Neuritis

I can't really help with your specific problem, but I do know a bit about what you're going through as I had unexplained optic neuritis last year, in my left eye. It was in october, and I would say I have just about fully recovered. I say just about because sometimes I still get pain in that eye and i've had a few days where the pain really reminds me of the type of pain when you have on (not intense and more like a pressure). Obviously this causes me panic when I think I may be getting it again as they do test you for ms on a second occurence in my health care area.

I have my last (hopefully) appointment mid july at the opthalmologist in the hospital, and I hope to be 'signed off' that day.

I can also relate to the sinusitis thing, as that's what the hospital tried to tell me I may have, I went to the doctor who gave me antibiotics just in case, but he was reluctant to believe it was the cause - especially since I wansn't experiencing the type of pain you would get with sinusitis.

Mine has been put down to a virus I think, and I just have to hope there's no recurrence of it.

Hope you are feeling better soon. :)

Well my ent doctor has given me the "there's nothing wrong with your sinuses", so i'm off to find an nueroopthamologist in my area.

I do know that the pain gets worse my neck is out of alignments (that's when I see my chiropractor), and i'm familiar what nerves control the face from the brain stem. I just hope that the nueroopthamologist will be able to give me some news when I see him/her. I do hope that it is nothing more than viral.

Now how long have you had your neuritis before things started to pick up for you?

I had it bad for just about a week, then I could see it beginning to clear. By that I mean I was almost completely blind in that eye for about 5 or 6 days. Quite worrying! Then my vision came back from the top, and it was like a cloud dropping a little each day. Then my colours and contrast were out, but they got back to near normal within the month. I have to say that the pain (although mild) lasted a bit longer, and as I said I still have times when I think it might be coming back. I took it last october.

Do you realise it's very unusual to take on in both eyes at once. I don't know if that maybe suggests a cause other than ms. Also I hope you realise that mris aren't 100% conclusive, but at the end of the day, you really just have to recover from your on, hope that it doesn't happen again, and if it does then you just have to overcome that and any other problems you may have. If you think about it - it's not really the worst thing you could have....Although you'd rather be totally healthy.

Hope you're feeling better and more settled about it all soon. :)
