I was at the doc yesterday and she has advised that I have blood tests and an ultrasound scan as she thinks it is a problem with my gallbladder. Has anyone else had tests for this and what should I expect.

Hi, I am new to this board, but I will try to help. I am scheduled to see a surgeon next week for gallbladder not functioning. I had the ultrasound(thry could not tell anything except a polyp on the gallbladder so sent me to have a hida scan. My gallbladder would not show up on the scan for the longest time which to the nurse indicated an obstruction.After looking at results,i am headed to the surgeon. The hida scan takes about 2 hours,mine was a breeze,just got sore from laying in one place that long. Hope you have good results.

Pain Under Right Ribcage
I have had this pain for almost two years now. Much bloating, gas etc. Nauseous most of the time. I have had blood test twice, ultrasound twice, endoscopy twice and a c.T. Scan. They have not found anything wrong. My doctors don't believe in a hida scan. Does this sound like a non-functioning gall bladder for those of you that have had a non-functioning gall bladder?

Hida
I just had my first hida. Doc thinks it's a bit of a reach but worth a try. Have had some gas pressure under my ribs, mostly left sided but moved to the right some days. More discomfort, and not really pain.

The tech said she does a lot more hida scans right after the holidays compared to the rest of the year. The procedure was not bad at all. My head was never under the scanner so those who are claustrophobic need not worry if your machine is like mine. They inject you with a trace amount of radioactive substance. Other than a pin prick, it didn't feel like anything. Then you lay there until the substance hits your gallbladder and lights it up on their screen. The tech told me 3 out of the last 4 people she did took a long time for the gb to show up, mine included. I dunno, maybe like 30-45 minutes of laying there.

Then, if you got the right test, the next step is to inject cck. This is a hormone I think, which causes things to happen in your digestive system. She told me that I would feel nausceous for 2-3 minutes maybe. It was nothing compared to drinking that rotten barium milkshake for the upper gi that I had before this! It wasn't so much nausea as it was a feeling having to go to the bathroom very soon. Apparently this is hormone makes the gallbladder and other parts "pump" after a meal. They they measure the flow of.. I assume the radioactive stuff.. As it then exits the gallbladder. Then the docs somehow pin a percentage on it.

All in all, the hida scan was not bad at all. 2-3 minutes of feeling weird was the worst part, and of course laying there for 30-45 minutes at a time (or over an hour if they don't give you a break in between tests like my tech did).

Still no results, I will get them tomorrow I guess.

Pain Under Right Rib
I had my gallbladder removed about a year ago. I have experienced pain every day since then. My doctor thinks I have pre-rash phase of shingles. I have been on acyclovir for three months. It takes the edge off but does not relieve the pain. I have pain to my back sometimes and always have an itch on my back directly behind the pain below my rib cage. The pain is worse after I eat. I have gained weight. I have been going to the doctor every 3 months for the past 2 years. I thought when they removed my gallbladder that the pain would stop. I had this pain before the surgery. I have lerned to live with it, but you would think with today's technology they could find out what is causing the pain.

Re:::pain After Gall Bladder Removal
Wow,candicenia,i have the same problem----my gall bladder was removed after numerous tests---most came back normal------but they finally decided to take out the gall bladder, and they said they did find some stones---surgery was feb 10-----i did feel better for a while-but slowly the problems came back -- to the point now that at times the pain is unbearable......Everything I eat causes pain & naseau--....Went to the dr today----wants to do a colonoscopy--the only test left to do-----apparently the intestines loop up & around to the area of the gall bladder & pancreas...Test is next week---if they don't find anything I think i'll go crazy !!!!!
