Dyslexia Testing In Atlanta
Posted: 06-16-06 09:03am

My cousin's son goes to private school outside of atlanta and he has signs of being dyslexic. The school is not authorized to do the testing and told my cousin that she would have to enroll him into public school and then re-register him into his private school. Plus he missed passing the reading part of his exams by 2 points and might have to repeat the 3rd grade. Long story short does anyone know of any testing facilities in the atlanta area.

I'm sorry I don't no of any i'm from the uk, but thats stupid if the school cant do it you shouldn't have to change his school you can see an educational psycologist and they can do a test for you, all schools have connections with an educational psycologist they have to, thats what we did with my lil bro because I got diagnosed at college so they said he should have a test too (even though I think its pretty oviouse we are dyslexic)

True. The new federal idea 2004 (individuals with disabilities education act) states that the district in which the private school resides is the district that needs to do the testing. Find out what school district the child resides in and contact the district. The big problem you may run into is the lack of interventions. If the school does not have enough interventions then the district may say that enough hasn't been done. In order for a child to get tested in most school district, the school is required to keep a list of various interventions and the outcomes. If, after many interventions, the child is still having difficulty then the child usually has an evaluation.

So, your first step is to call the local school district. If they are confused, contact the state department of education. You shouldn't have to pay out of your own pocket for an evaluation.

Good luck and pm me if you want specific information. This is my field of expertise.
