Thats right I learned a good lesson yesterday, I learned that diabetes is nothing to play around with, I have diabetes, diagnosed 3 yrs. Ago. I have always been able to control mine by diet and exercise every now and then I could eat a bowl of ice cream and it would not affect me to bad, but last weekend I eat a bowl of sherbert and it has sent me almost to the grave. Went to hospital because I got so sick I could not eat or drinkand I dehydrated my body wich then started ketoacidosis then I got so weak I could not even sit up with out help sugar went high and would not come down, so now im on medication to control my sugar thanks to my stupidity , but I learned that I can not be playing around with my sugar any more

It's unlikely that the bowl of ice cream is what sent you to the hospital; if that didn't, something else would have.

You did not mention what type of diabetes you have. Type 2 can be controlled by diet and exercise in many people.

Type 1 diabetes requires insulin in order to live. Without insulin, a person will starve to death (despite eating everything in the world) and they will go into dka (diabetic ketoacidosis).

I'm guessing you are talking about type 2 diabetes. You should see an endocrinologist about getting the best treatment. Typically, oral meds like metformin will help, but new medications like byetta (injected -- don't worry, needles are not painful) have shown great help in many people, including weight loss (if you need to lose weight).

Ketoacidosis is very rare in type 2 diabetes, so i'm not really able to tell from your post as to which kind of diabetes you have.

If you can't get enough control with your type 2 diabetes, insulin is the best route. It will let you eat what you want, when, but if you're overweight, you will have to restrict your food intake.

If you're looking for a good show to watch on tv, try dlife tv -- you can find the show times when it's on television at dlife.Com, as well as other diabetes information.

Diabetes
I am type 2 diabetic, I go to a diabetic specialist now since I went into the ketosis thing , my Dr. Said it was unusual for a type 2 to have as many ketones in urine as I did so he sent me to a specialist. And I do feel better , I can eat but not a whole lot are I will get sick to my stomach. If im still like this by next tues. They will check my gallbladder , said gallblader trouble is common with diabetics. I will wait and see what happens .

Yes, ketoacidosis is rare in type 2's. Are you overweight?

If you aren't, you might be type 1, or mody. To read about mody, use google to search for the terms "diabetes mody".

There are so many stories of people who go on oral meds with doctors thinking that they are type 2, only to find out that they are type 1 cases weeks or even months later. Keep an eye out.

Keep a Watch Out
Thanks kati, I will certainly keep a watch out for type 1, just my luck, I have been having trouble today with my sugar going from 170 to 80 in a blink of a eye , kinda scary to be by myself but I go back to the Dr. Tommorrow , I have eat nothing but a burger without the bun, and a dill pickle today. Scared to eat very much till I can see what is going on , ive been doing fine on this med. Until today . Thanks for the web site , very interesting .
