Q: What causes Pressure on the top of the Head and behind the E
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 6th, 2006
Over the past 3 weeks I have had pressure on the top of my head, and behind my ears. The pressure goes away when I lay down or sleep. I have been worried about a tumor, and have been waking up at 4am with a racing heart and trembling in my eyes and body. My blood pressure medication has been raised from 25mg to 50mg atenolol, because it has been running in the upper 140s over the upper 90s. I have seen the doctor 3 times and he says that it is my bp. I had a cat scan a year and a half ago, and it was clean. What should I do? What is your diag.?

Anytime blood pressure goes over 140/90, you are experiencing high blood pressure (HTA). High blood pressure can manifest as pressure in the head or behind the ears. Your blood pressure should be monitored 24 hours per day to see if HTA causes the described symptoms during the night. I also recommend you check your blood lipid status and try to reduce your body mass. If your blood pressure is not consistently high... it is also possible that anxiety is causing these symptoms.
