Q: What do High ALT levels indicate with a Positive Hep-C test?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on June 5th, 2006
My husband recieved his lab results. He came out positive for Hepatitis C. For the past few weeks he has gotten sharp pains in his mid abdominal stomach and sometimes he breaks out with a swear and chills. He then feels dizzy but then it will subside if he eats something sweet. We got his lab results and his glucose came to62 Low and his ALT 93 High, AST 104 normal and his Lipase 74 High, and Amalase 91 normal.
Please help us understand this. what can it mean. If his Lipase is abnormal why is his Amalase normal. Does this indicate that there are some damage to the pancreas and if so could this be the cause of the pain he is experiencing? The same question applies to his AST ALT results. I thank you. please help us in understanding this, So that we can take the necessary action in treating this..:(.

A positive Hepatitis C test and high ALT indicates that your husband’s liver is damaged by the inflammation caused by Hepatitis C-virus (HCV). I am not sure about the pancreas, so I recommend you repeat the laboratory analyses for amylase and lipase in the serum. You can also check the levels of conjugated and not-conjugated bilirubin in the blood.
