Hi, this question is for anyone who was able to get pregnant after husband went through varicocele repair operation. Did it improve the motility of the sperm significantly and how long afterward did you get pregnant?

Thanks

you have no idea how your story makes me feel - I finally have something to look forward to. I mean, we only tried once last month and didn't succeed & we just tried this month, but i'm not sure if I will be, cause my husband has vericocele as well. We just got him on my insurance and got his card in the mail, so we're gonna be going to the doctor soon to do his sperm count and see when he can go for a surgery.
Here's my question though - what type of doctor should we go to? Family doc? Is there a gyno for guys? Or should we just go see a fetility doc?

Hello,

my husband had a varicocele repair (he had one varicocele in each testicle) my husband's motility was less than 1% and count less than 100 thousand! I'm sorry to say that the operation made no difference to either motility or count. But please don't loose hope; there is always a chance you could still fall pregnant with a low sperm count - i've just got a positive pregnancy test after 7 years! I'm still waiting to see my doctor to confirm my bloods - but everything's looking very promising (many symptoms.)

don't give up and remember that we're all different - sometimes the varicocele repair works for some and not others. Our clinic told us that there is 10% chance of a 15% rise in count after the operation, we just were't in that 10% but your husband might be lucky. You've nothing to loose (i've never heard of it reducing the count or anything going wrong.)

good luck to you both, and if all else fails there is always other treatments available to you, a low count does not mean you'll never be pregnant without a donor.

Wow thats great! Congratulations my partner had an appointment with his urologist today to explain his proceedure he did say there is always a chance of making his sperm count lower but im sure its a low chance of that happening. We still have few months to wait yet but we're just trying to enjoy life until we get back into the serious trying. Once again congratulations they say it happens when you least expect it. Good luck with the little angel!

I am so glad there is someone talking about this my hubby just found this out yest. That he has varicocele vein prob left testicle so today they did an ultra sound today and we have to wait till mon to get the results but more than likely he will have the surgery done. We were told from his last sprem analysis that he had 48% alive and moving and not even 100 thousand sperm. He also is going to a uroloigist I know someone asked so please keep this upgoing since we are all in the same boat at the same time!!

Re: Varicocele Repair
Hi there,

i had a similar problem ...After it... But then got advice to stop drinking coffee and to supplement glyconutritionals, which according to glyco-biology studies play a leading role in egg fertil. Aso.

Now I would even go so far to 'presume' that I should have done these 2 simple steps in the first place... Who knows whether this was the main problem in the first place?

Happy new year,

Varicocele Repair
I am glad that there are others going through this as well. Support and common experiences make me feel like I am not so alone in this nightmare. My husband had a varicocele repair done in september of 06. He just had his three month sperm analysis done the end of january and there is improvement with motility, but not count. We were told by our urologist that you have to wait for a max of 9 months to see the full effects of the repair, which puts us to the beginning of may before we will know for sure if there is enough of an improvement to help. Unfortunately, my husband has a large amount of other "matter" in his ejaculate which they believe is making it near impossible for the sperm he does have to make it through. To much information, I know. Anyway, we have one more test, a split ejaculate sperm analysis, to see if we have any chance of getting pregnant on our own. If not, we start the road to ivf. Good luck to all how have had or are having the varicocele repair done for their husbands. I did not realize how much I was counting on the surgery working for us until we didn't get the results we were hoping for. I still remain positive and hopeful. That is the best strategy while working with infertility, I think.

My husband (now 32) went for his first sperm analysis 1.5 years (2007) after we got married. The results were very depressing “infertility” 3.15 million total sperm count, total motility 30%, normal forms morphology 30%!! My Endocrinologist said that he should redo the analysis in the winter as the heat might have caused the reduction in sperm count with the first test reading. Well, it took my husband another 6 months to get the courage to re-do the test. His excuse was, it’s not going to be positive as I am under pressure and extremely stressed. The results were similar as the last time “infertility”. At this point two years had passed and I was feeling really depressed.

All my friends were having babies and their second one was on the way. I hadn’t even begun (I am 26). My husband then decided to see a Urologist and was diagnosed with a Varicocele, he also saw my Endocrinologist who confirmed it without an ultrasound. He went for the surgery in July 2008, the wound became infected and he had to take antibiotics for 20 days. We now have to wait a further 3 months for the sperm to regenerate before doing another sperm analysis. He will probably have the new sperm test done in December 2008.

My husband had his hormones tested, FSH 9.2 (normal), LH 6.79 (Normal), Prolactin 194.7 (Normal), Testosterone 13.76 (Normal)

I am on PTU (100 mg) for my thyroid which I am sure has stabilized. I see my Endocrinologist in October 2008.

I feel life is so unfair at times and I don’t understand why we have to go through these struggles….

If someone has had a similar experience, please share your experience and if you were able to conceive naturally after a certain period of time. I will let you know the new results in December.

Varicose Repair/Infertility
Hello all, I am 33, my husband is 31, and we've been TTC for 6 months. Now granted, that's not a long time; however, I have a history of fibroids that required surgery last year, and so I started charting/temp'ing once my OB/GYN cleared me medically. Because of my age and fibroid history, my doc told me we needed to be aggressive with our efforts, because my other fibroids will still continue to grow-possibly requiring more surgery. We were charting, and doing everything "to the day" and nothing. My doc had both of us tested, and all my labs came back normal. My husband's analysis; however, came back with low motility (26%). He repeated the test in one month after switching to straight boxers and spending plenty of "after-shower" time in front of the fan to "cool off", and it went up-to a whopping 30%. We were then referred to a urologist who told him he had large varicocele's in both sides. The treatment of choice is obviously the surgery, but we are at a crossroads. The urologist stated that, based on literature for bilateral varicocele's (both sides), the range of improvement is 30-50%, which obviously still would not bring him into the >50% range to be within normal limits. On the other hand, I have those blasted fibroids that are still growing and decreasing my "uterine life". My OB/GYN stated she wouldn't recommend my husband having the surgery because it's not guaranteed to work plus the time it would take to see IF it did work could jepordize our overall time to try because of my fibroid's. She unequivocally recommended IVF. Needless to say, I was kind of devastated. Our insurance doesn't cover IVF, it may not even cover the varicocele repair if it's submitted as a treatment for infertility. So the issue of money is at hand, as well as timing. We have an appointment with a fertility clinic this monday (15th) to see what our specific options are with our individual complicated history's. I am very prayerful that we will get a good report, but I am scared. Our situation got so complicated so quickly, and I am leary of the risks of IVF/multiples with my fibroid condition. Any insight you guys might have would be great!

varicocele/pregnant
Hello, Keep the faith. In June 08 was a year we have been trying.July 08 we went to a urologist took a sperm count 3 mill.20% mobility.Next sperm test 1 month later Aug 08, 2 mill.20% mobility.Surgery was set Sept 16, 08. Went Dec 1,08 for 1st test, 3month follow up. 11 mill. 50% mobility. I ovulated on Dec 21,08. I conceived, I am pregnant! I have been to by a couple of Dr.'s that you need 20 mil. and 60% mobility, and look conceive with 11 mill, 50% mobility.. Keep trying, I know how you feel, but it can happen. Keep the faith.

vericocele/hydrocele but not infertile
I am 33 yrs old now.In my early 20's i had been diognised with hydrocele in the right and vericocele in the left.My urologist advised me to correct the hydrocele only at this stage and not the vericocele because i was not married yet.But i opted for both at one go.He asked me have a semen analysis.i refused because that would lead to psychological problem if my sperm count was too low before my marriage.Eventually i went for both hydrocele and vericocele surgery at my age of 23.After the surgery vericocele surfaced again not only in the left side but also in the right. It was much bigger than earlier.I got married at 29.three years we had been childless.I was planning to go for sperm analysis.that's the time my wife got pregnant. Now my child is 3 months old.Still i've got heavy vericocele on my scrotum.so dont worry for those who got vericocele.u may become father soon.
