What can I do to prevent complications of Spherocytosis? Posted: 06-03-06 13:54pm
I have spherocytosis and had my spleen
removed when I was eight years old. Now I
am 23 and would like to know if there is
anything I can do or take that would
prevent complications in the future.
It seems that there is nothing you can do
to prevent complications caused by
spherocytosis because the disease is
genetically conditioned. The erythrocytes
in your body are more fragile than normal
and can be easily broken in the spleen.
The removal of the spleen (spleenectomy)
is the only treatment available at this
time. You can take action, however, and
focus your energies into living a healthy
life. You can also increase your
awareness of infections and keep a safe
distance from them.
