Is This An Std? Posted: 06-01-06 20:03pm
I was recently diagnosed with a yeast
infection and bacterial vaginosis. In
some literature i've read bacterial
vaginosis is an std. Is bacterial
vaginosis a std? I have not been sexually
active for 18 years except for
masturbation and the use of 'toys'. I do
not understand if it is an std. From what
I understand, it is a std but cannot be
transferred sexually between partners.
No, it isn't an std. It's an infection
very much like thrush which can occur.
It's an overgrowth of naturally occuring
bacteria, although it's more common in
sexually active women. I had this after I
had my ius fitted.
I understand that some sources refer to it
as an std but it isn't - if it were then
both partners would need to be treated for
the condition and, as you've said, it
would be passed through sexual contact -
that's untrue. I spoke alot to my doctor
and the practice nurse about this as I was
worried (having never even had thrush
before) but it was impossible for me to
have an std (checked before the insertion
of my ius and also in a monogamous
relationship who i've had checked lol).
In the most literal sense a sexually transmitted disease is
precicely that - passed on through sexual
contact and bv isn't.
Hope this helps (and hope the anibiotics
aren't to bad)

Thanks for your clarification. I'm glad
it's not a std.
I am handling the antibiotics ok. I am
flushed a little but also it's hot and our
air conditioner is on the fritz lol--so is
it the medication or the heat? I say the
heat. I feel disoriented and it's hard to
concentrate but this happens at this time
of day normally for me. My appetite has
lessened a bit but not much. My headache
was there before I took the antibiotic.
But I am avoiding alcohol in every form,
even mouthwash and toothpaste like my
pcp/gyn instructed me.
