Q: New Breakfast Ideas
asked by: stumars on May 29th, 2006

Hey all im after some other ideas for breakfast. I usually have 100% brown rice puffs with nothing added to them. I usually slice a peach or pear and add to the bowl, and I use normal cows milk.
Im getting pretty sick of this, somedays I have eggs, any other ideas, oh and to make things harder im gluten intolerant so that rules out toast and things too.

Why don't you try making yourself an omellet with different veggies in it and some cheese? That's always good.

Eggs bake up pretty well also. You can make a simple casserole with several well beaten eggs, and your favorite veggies like broccoli, mushrooms, and zucchini squash. I have not added dairy back into my diet, but cheese and a little milk are good mixed in with this.
Spray the casserole dish with olive oil, pour in the mixture, and bake at 350'. I make a large one and it cooks about 45 minutes. I can slice it up into individual servings to take care of a week of breakfasts.

Yeah I usually do the omelete and vegies thing for a late dinner sometimes, I think I found a gluten free bread that actually tastes ok so I might be able to have toast and stuff now which will help heaps.
And that egg caserole sounds like a pretty good idea.
Thanks guys

I, too, am getting very tired of breakfast - which is not a good thing considering it is the most important meal for us hypos ...

Right now, it seems I can't handle wheat (whole grain), much to my chagrin (why could I handle it just fine before I went on a hypo diet???), so breads are out.

But here are my suggestions:

#1: tofurky. At trader joes. It's 4 long fat "turkey sausage links" made from tofu. It's not bland at all since it has sun dried tomatoes and basil in it. And a massive amount of protein, and good fiber too.

#2: poached eggs (and bacon). I found a plastic microwavable device at the grocery store that lets you drop two eggs into it and micro it for 60 seconds and you have 2 perfect poached eggs. I am a food-clueless single bachelor, so this is a big help.

#3: spinach/mushroom omlette (i have only aspired to make this, since i'm a lazy, bumbling fool in the kitchen).

Yuck! Read labels! Grains are disastrous for hypoglycemics, I don't know why saunders did that diet sometimes (they can be added back later, i'm currently working on the formula so it can be an occasional addition). Anyway, there are problems with what you listed:

1. Read that tofurky label, i'm going to bet they have turbinado, evaporated cane sugar or some sort of other tricky "organic" sugar. In addition, large amounts of soy are not good for you.

2. Bacon is always cured and has some form of badness in it you can't eat.

Argh. Ok... Well scratch that then. I will double-check the tofurkey label, but I thought it could have a small amount of sugar as long the ratio of protein/fat far outweighed it?? Darnit, tofurkey was my savior ...

I suppose i'm still confused about (whole) grains then if they are "disastrous". I thought whole grains meant complex carb since they still have the husks on them and remain unrefined. I have so much to learn ... I was buying whole wheat pasta, buckwheat pasta at mother's market .... Geez

and bacon? It was quick, easy, tasty... And I figured as long as I wasn't getting the "maple bacon" that i'd be ok ...

Nope, all bacon is cured in some way, whether it be molasses or whatever. Why was tofurky your savior? Why not just actual, organic or free range turkey? Grains raise your sugar faster than some vegetables and make it harder to maintain the 100g max for a day. Your body will actually adapt to grains if you want to try them, but it will take over a year to notice any real difference, thus why it sucks.
