Q: Nuva Ring Users- Can You Use a Contraceptive Sponge??

Hi everyone. My name is emily and I have been on the nuvaring for about 3 months now and me and my boyfriend recently became intimate for the first time. We were both virgins, and used condoms the first time because I want to make sure to have double the protection. The problem is, he's a pretty girthy guy. He's about 7 inches long, with a 2 3/4 inch girth, which makes wearing a condom very uncomfortable for him. We tried regular condoms, then magnums, then magnum xl's, and they were all too small around. Our next thought was to use the contraceptive sponge, but..... I wasn't sure.... Can nuvaring users use a contraceptive sponge as well?? Does it fit right? Does it release as many hormones?? I was wondering any other nuvaring users have tried this before, or if anyone knows if this is possible. Thanks a lot!

You are perfectly safe using the nuva ring alone, but the sponge would add some protection and it is safe to use nuva ring and a sponge.

If you are worried, why not have "that talk" with your boyfriend.

Talk about what you would do if you got pregnant.

I will always have an abortion if I get pregnant, no compromise..I have a fiance' and only date guys who understand that I never want kids.

So perhaps you are your b/f need to talk about 'what if' it happens to you..Would you have an abortion, would you have baby...Etc..

See, that's the reason why I am only comfortable using the nuvaring and a back-up method... There honestly could be no "what if". That's the reason we've waited so long to have sex. If he had a baby, which would be considered a dependent, he would be kicked out of his presigious academy, where they are not allowed to have wives/husbands or children, i.E. Dependents. We've had this talk many many times before, and if something were to go wrong, we would definetly not have an abortion because we both do not believe that we have that right to take away our baby's life. A baby right now could literally screw up any future we might have together or apart.

I have another question, though-- does wearing both at the same time pose a positioning problem in the vagina?

Thanks for your advice on the combo nuvaring and sponge! I really wish we didn't have to be this careful... But it's only until he graduates from college (2 more years!) and it just brings me more peace of mind this way. We have a long-distance relationship, and I couldn't imagine being pregnant and raising a child much less a newborn on my own for 2 years.
