Q: I Have Hypoglycemia And It Got Worst With An Antioxidant

Hi all,

1 year ago I had really bad social anxiety and I searched the internet and found hypoglycemia. For 1 year I have not eaten sugar, or white starch. With each meal I have protein, vegetables, and complex carb.

1 month ago I was taking an antionxidant named pycnogenol that a doctor recommended. This pycnogenol lowered my blood sugar severely and 2 weeks ago my hypoglycemia got worst. I felt like fainting, I thought I was going crazy at nights when the blood sugar would go so low.

I went to the doctor and he said my blood test came out fine. These 2 weeks I tried to continue eating the healthy way I have been eating (that I mentioned above) but it made my hypoglycemia worst.

I've never had it like this. I googled pycnogenol and found out that antioxidant lowers blood sugar.

Yesterday I decided to try something different. I removed the browns and did a diet similar to stan's. Yesterday and today I am feeling more like myself.

Has anyone had a similar experience with a supplement or an antioxidant, that made your hypoglycemia worst?

I am so happy I am feeling better today, I thought I was going to lose my job which I had to work so hard to get. I have been off sugar and white starches for 1 year.

Will I go back to being able to tolerate browns?
:) thank you for all your help.

What do you mean when you say browns? If you mean carbohydrates the answer is yes, but you must test slowly and in very small amounts at first. Good to hear you got better! A couple things set me off.

1. Multi-vitamins: some people say use them but I think it's useless and only seems to cause people problems. Did with me.
2. B-complex: usually recommended, and usually fails for everybody.
3. Protein shakes: even ones with no artificial crap in them usually set everyone off because it's too much protein at once.

I think some vitamin supplements can be beneficial but you must be very careful. Not only does it have to be sugar free but starch free, gluten free, rice free, soy free, corn free, dairy free, etc. Your body will react to those other things as well, especially if you're not eating any of that.

Hi All
Hi all,

thanks for replying. By browns I meant complex carbohydrates.

Yeah, I got a big scare taking that pycnogenol for 1 month.
My sugar just went down all of a sudden, and then it got worst and worst. Is this a characteristic of low blood sugar, for it to go down and get worst and worst?

Also, after the antioxidant I was really feeling horrible from the low sugar for 1 week and 2 days.

I have 3 days that I eliminated complex carbohydrates and I am finding that I am feeling better. I still get some low blood sugars during the day but it's not as low as it was a week ago.
Is this a common thing to happen when starting the hypoglycemia diet?
Also, how long will it take for the ups and downs to go away?

Thanks,
mayra.

It's going to happen with anyone that when you find something you shouldn't be eating the symptoms will get worse and worse if you keep eating it. It depends on the person, but most people, using my suggestions, seem to notice significant improvement in a week or so. Best thing is to not worry about the lows, at least they're better than they were before. I bet when you were feeling bad you would have killed to feel as good as you do now. You should notice them slowly going away, I bet in about two weeks you'll feel a lot better.

I have 3 days of eliminating browns since my symptoms got so bad last week. You are absolutely right, last week I would have done anything to feel the way I feel now.

My only symptom tonight is that I feel distant. But today is only day 3 for me. I was feeling so bad last week I had to miss work.

I was able to go to work this week. It's like my body feels stable. The highs are not fast highs, and the lows are not that low.

Before this I have had 1 year off sugar and white starches. My anxiety was so bad I couldn't get a job. Right now I have the job I wanted. This past week I was so afraid I was going to lose my job, and everything I have worked so hard for.

Stan, have you heard abou the hai diet? It seems similar to yours. I'm following the hai diet right now.

I'm going to stick around this forum. I need this support.

Thanks,

I think the feeling you are talking about is depersonalization/derealization, it's scary but pretty common in hypoglycemia for some reason. If this is what it is, don't worry about it, you get used to it and then it goes away. What is the hai diet, i've never heard of it?

Hi stan,

the hai diet is from the hypoglycemia association, inc. Check out this link. Fred.Net/slowup/haidiet.Txt

the diet is similar to yours.

Let me know what you think of it.

Oh yeah, that, I actually based my diet off of information there, as well as other books. His diet is good, probably the best one out there.

I Feel Better And Better Each Day.
Hi all,

i would like to share that after my hypoglycemia/blood sugar crash from taking the antioxidant and being sick for 1 1/2 weeks, I am now doing better each day.

I have been on the hypoglycemia diet for just 4 days and I am feeling oh so much better. The only symptom I have once in a while are depersonalization/derealization but it's only for a few seconds. I know that too shall pass.

Thank you all,

Today Was Not a Good Day :(
Hi all,

i was so excited this morning. After 4 days of following the hypoglycemia diet I felt so great this morning.

I keep a food journal and I find that this has helped me immensely.

At 7:00 am I had breakfast.

At 10:00am I remember I started to feel irritated at work.
At 10:30 am I had a snack of a few almonds.
11:00am I felt a faint feeling, and I felt poor memory. I immediately went to have a protein snack. My day was like this the whole day. I tried to fix it by having frequent snacks of protein. I work with databases/computers so memory is a huge thing for me.

I can see that my problem was that I got so excited because I was feeling like myself that I didn't have a snack soon enough after breakfast. I should have had a snack at the most after 2 1/2 hours after breakfast.

Right now I don't feel as good as I felt this morning, but I don't feel as horrible as I felt this sunday before I started this diet.

Is this common for me to have had that blood sugar crash for missing a snack?

Will this rollercoaster of ups and downs blood sugars stop if I continue to take care of myself?

I was feeling so great this morning.

Blood sugar problems can affect memory, yes. Also, early in treatment missing snacks can cause a crash, later you will fine that missing now and then doesn't matter.

Help Please
Hi all,

this saturday was an okay day for me. I had a snack every 2 hours. My last snack was at 10:40 pm. It is know 11:56 pm and I am feeling like a cold feeling behind my head, and not alot of brain activity.

I'm afraid I might lose my memory. Has anyone felt like this?

I don't want to lose my memory.

I dont' know if this is just part of the process of getting better, and I am just scaring myself.

I want to get better.

I'm going to have some almonds and hopefully try to go to bed.

I'm used to thinking alot, and right now my brain is like not that active.

Please advise.

Stuff like this will happen, unfortunately. As with any hypoglycemic symptom, never worry about it unless it persists for several weeks with no let-up. You'll find this doesn't occur. You won't lose your memory, the worry is actually a symptom itself, so keep that in mind. You did the right thing. If you're ever wakeful at night, have some protein. Eggs are great for this, but nuts are perfectly fine. You'll be okay.

Hi mayra,

i know exactly how you feel. I still sometimes have a low blood sugar attack for no reason and i've been on my diet for almost 5 months. They are getting less frequent though and i'm having more days when I feel really good and i'm more productive.

Sometimes, especially at night, i'm very anxious and worry about everything. As soon as my blood sugar comes up, I stop feeling that way. It really has an effect on your brain but just realize it's temporary and you'll feel better soon for longer periods of time.
