Q: No Gout Yet, But High Uric Acid(12)

I have been on hydrochlorothiazide for kidney stones for awhile (consistently for 1-1/2 years) and went back in for some blood work and checkup. Blood work came back with elevated uric acid (12) and also calcium I think that was (8).

I never had any joint issues, but I do have bad knees from sports injuries over the years they are the only joints that bother me, oh and light carpal tunnel.

I have been taking organic apple cider vinegar and organic raw honey (from local bees and local wildflowers) for almost 2 weeks now and am going back next month to get checked out, about 6 weeks from when I started acv/honey.

I know this is a gout section here, but seems the best place for answers to my questions. I do not want to go on any more pills, and stopped my hydrochlorothiazide when I found it can elevate ua and c and was hopefully the cause.

Now for some questions...

1. Does the acv (apple cider vinegar) work?

2. If so how much can I lower it with this in my 6 week time?

3. Can I take too much acv?

4. With a ua of 12 what are my chances of getting gout before I can lower my ua?

5. Can I do the baking soda while I do acv/honey?

6. Does bs work to lower ua or more to relieve gout symtoms?

I think that’s it but I am sure I will think of more later, seen a lot of great information on this site over the past few days.

Thanks,
tom

Hydrochlorothiazide (hctz) is used to treat calcium kidney stones because it reduces the excretion of calcium by the kidneys thus can prevent calcium stones from worsening. Unfortunately, it also reduces the excretion of uric acid by the kidneys and causes hyperuricemia (high blood uric acid level). In addition, hctz can lose its punch on lowering urine calcium level over time. Your blood calcium level of 8 is lower than normal (8.5~10.4 mg/dl). That may imply hctz is losing its punch on lowering the urine calcium level that's why the blood calcium level is not high. Have you had a 24-hour urine test to check on the urine calcium and uric acid levels? That will help you understand your calcium and uric acid problems. There are other medicines for treating calcium stones without causing hyperuricemia. You may like to ask your doctor to replace hcth with another medicine.

A study has shown taking 10 grams (2 teaspoons) of baking soda a day can reduce the blood ua level by 1 mg/dl, which is rather small as compared with what allopurinol, benemid, ... Can do (2.5~3.5 mg/dl reduction). Besides, it's not a good idea to take 10 grams of baking soda a day for an extended period of time. While baking soda is not a treatment for gout in mainstream medicine, it appears to work very well in treating gout attacks, especially, when taken with nsaids and/or others. Among the 373 gout patients who answered the question: "if you have tried baking soda to treat and prevent gout, was baking soda ..." , 60% said "extremely useful, 13% said "very useful", and 13% said "useful".

Acv has no medical properties. (see the 5-20-06 post, http://ehealthforum.Com/health/topic63724. Html ). Consuming large amount of honey is bad for hyperuricemia because about 40% of honey is fructose which can cause ua to stay in the body longer and raise the blood ua level.

The blood ua level fluctuates. If your level is consistently near 12 mg/dl (normal, 4.5~7.0 mg/dl), I strongly suggest that you talk to your rheumatologist or nephrologist about lowering it. Take care.

Ok thanks. I will look into other medications and also talk to my doctor on the 15th. I am still taking the acv/honey being I feel it is helping other issues I have that I already notice changes in. Also helped me lose a little weight already, so can not complain about that.

I also seem to be passing more stuff in my urine, but that could be from removing the meds that kept it in my blood. I was not sure what my calcium number was, that was a guess but he did say it was "elevated" so I must have been wrong on that number.

I did do the baking soda thing a few times (far from acv times) to add to it a little the past few days.

Good thing is stuff is passing, so I am positive something (me the acv or the extra water) is removing uric acid now.

Well I went back for more bloodwork, I was mistaken calcium was 12 uricacid was 9 . I don't know if they went down yet, but I do think the apple cider vinegar/organic honey is working. I feel better and even lost almost 20lbs.

Doctor said as long as calcium didnt go up I can stay off the pills, if calcium did go up then I need to go on half a dose. :( hopefully I am good now.

Thanks for the info.
