Q: How is Achalasia Treated?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 16th, 2006
Do people die of Achalasia? I know that you can starve but if my weight is now 44.3 kilos down from 47.8 kilos 2 months ago how low would my weight have to go before I will need to have the jeujonostomy feeding tube inserted? My height is 5' 4" in relation to my weight.

The ideal weight for women of your age and eight should be around 63kg. Achalasia causes weight loss because due to difficulties eating. A jejunostomy feeding tube may be unnecessary. Therapy to treat achalasia usually involves dilation of the lower sphincter or injection with a botulinum toxin to paralyze the sphincter and prevent spasms. Medications such as long-acting nitrates or calcium channel blockers can also be used to lower the pressure at the lower esophagus sphincter. Surgery to decrease the pressure in the lower sphincter (called an esophagomyotomy) may be indicated if other interventions fail.
