I was diagnosed yesterday with endstage achalasia. After previously having oesophagectomy 18 months ago to help relieve symptoms, my achalasia has now progressed where my thoracic surgeon said that in the coming months I shall need a jeujonostomy tube inserted. What remains (2" of oesophagus) has now narrowed where I find it extremely difficult to swallow pureed food and sometimes liquid. My weight is dropping off but not at a rate where I need the jeujonostomy inserted as yet. I am finding it extremely difficult to come to terms with what is happening to me and get very upset at the least little thing.
Do people die of achalasia? I know that you can starve but if my weight is now 44.3 kilos down from 47.8 kilos 2 months ago how low would my weight have to go before I will need to have the jeujonostomy feeding tube inserted? My height is 5' 4" in relation to my weight.
