Are These Seizures? Sorry It's Long...
Posted: 05-15-06 17:19pm

Hi, sorry to be so clueless on the subject...
I get episodes where my whole body shakes violently - enough to throw me out of bed (as it usually happens when I am falling asleep). When this finally ends, I am temporarily paralysed and completely numb - not able to even focus my eyes or catch my breath. One by one my limbs begin to regain blood flow and feeling until I have recovered, though I will still be extremely weak for a while afterwards. I have been getting these since I was 8 (i am now 19). When it first happened it was only in one leg, though soon I was getting it in my whole body. It is horrible as I don't lose conciousness so I can feel everything, see everything and hear everything but i'm completely powerless while i'm being thrown to the floor and bashed between furniture.
When this first happened, the doctor was called out and I stayed in hospital for a night where they took a lot of blood tests and tested my muscle strength. I had regular appointments at the hospital for blood tests and urine samples.
When it began to happen in my whole body, I was taken back to the doctor. He considered epilepsy though once he found out I didn't lose conciousness, he completely changed his mind. (though I know that ppl can take seizures while concious)
this went on for years, happening quite often, usually just as I was falling asleep so that it would jerk me awake in panic. I still had appointments at the hospital for blood tests, urine samples, eyes and ear tests, tests for muscle strength etc - I was never tested for epilepsy. Eventually they just stopped testing and said i'd grow out of it.
It has now disappeared for a good few years but I have always still been geting jolts when i'm falling asleep as if it's going to happen again. Last night I nearly took a complete one but it stopped. This is the closest I have come to one in years... So I am worried it's coming back.
I'm not expecting anyone to be able to diagnose me but I was hoping someone could at least tell me if this is what a seizure is (to give it a name if nothing else!) - if it gets any worse I will definately annoy the doctor again.
Sorry for the length but thanks for any advice.

they may be what u want to do is talk to your doctor about refural to a neurologest. When you see the neurologist ask about having an eeg done that will test you for the seizure activity. And do what they say to prepare for the test or it wont come out properly to be read. But before all that make sure your well informed here are a few sites I no they think im an fool but I have had this since birth so they can think it all they want it always comes out im right lol. Here are the sites I look at and there are more type epilepsy in the search and you should get more good luck]
