Ha ha. Wow. No one be worried! I wasn't drinking at nine... Too much water or too much of any liquid and sodas and energy drinks give me the pain too.

I wrote January 6th. I've learned a lot since then. I was diagnosed a month ago with Hodgkin's Lymphoma--highly treatable/curable at my stage--just 6 months of chemo to endure (make that embrace). Anyway, when I informed my oncologist at Chicago's Northwestern Hospital about the upper back pains after drinking, she looked at me and smiled. She said that's a very rare, yet well documented effect of Hodgkins. (That isn't to suggest that any of the rest of you have Hodgkin's as an underlying cause of this unusual problem.) But it was good to finally have a doctor (after several), know all about it. Actually, she said, no one has any idea what the connection between extreme upper back pain after drinking alcohol and Hodgkin's is all about, but that it does happen. She said after treatment, I should be able to resume drinking with no more problems. I'll let you know at the end of the summer.

My painfull story
I started drinking at the age of 13. Started smoking cigs and cannabis around that time too. At the age of 34 I started to dabble in coke and was a full blown addicted until one day I started getting intense pains in my sides. It started in my left side, flank area just below the ribs. It then moved over to the right side. Its a pain that is in the inside of my body. I have stopped all substances for about two and a half years now except for the occasional night out with my mates where I will drink about five pints. When I first went to the doctor they tested my urine for blood and protein...all was good. I was then sent to have an ultra sound of the kidney....all was good. I then had a MRI...all was good. I then had a full blood test and more urine tests...all was good. Then had a nuclear substance injected into my veins and the function of my kidneys were monitored...all was good. I have now been sent to pain management and prescribed a light dose of an antideppressant(spelling)which stops the brain from recieving messages of pain, so they say. I am a bit weary of taking this which is quite ironic considering my past drug use. Two years ago my ankles started to swell and ache every so often. I am told nothing is wrong with me. Maybe its punishment for being such a bad boy in my past!!!!

Pain in back when I drink alchohol
About a year ago. I had a stabbing pain in my back and they thought it was Acid reflux but it was hodgkin Lymphia. I am a father of 2 small kids and the age of 35. It was stage 2 almost 3. Alcholh saved my life because nothing was working. Go to the doctor and explain what going on and request a chest and neck extra and a CT scan. I didn''t believe it when I google the problem and went to my doctor. I switched to my wife doctor and he really listened and found it instantly after I had tried 3 acid reflux medications, a tread mill test for the heart, ultrasound in the stomache. They just didn''t check the upper chest. Its all gone but I went through 6 months of chemo and a month of radiation.
Go to the Doctor until they fix the problem.

Gallstones!! Cause of all digestive compliants. Will cause everything from GERD, heartburn, allergies, ms, arthritis all the way to z in alphabet. Had the exact same thing when drinking alcohol and cigarettes, and simply fixed this issue with a gallbladder/liver flush/s. (Well I struggled two years) Read Dr. Hulda Clarks stuff which gives you all the details and prep work to make this successful. I promise you and swear by it that this will work. Be patient, diligent and persistant. Follow ALL her instructions. SHE IS A MEDICAL DOCTOR THAT USES NATURAL MEDICINE. ALL HER STUFF IS FREE AS PER HER COPYRIGHT.

All the best, good health.

Hi, I am a 24 year old female and it only takes finishing one drink for me to get the severe cramping of my upper back and shoulders. When most people get a buzz and are feeling good, I get severe pain. I haven't pinpointed all of the varieties of alcohol that causes it for me however, malt vodka like Smirnoff will cause it and wine does not. Like all of you, my Husband thinks I am exaggerating/crazy and says he has never heard of such a thing. So, I was happy to hear all of your stories. I am an RN and have been trying to figure out the cause of this. I don't think it is GERD because I have been to a gastro-enterologist and had an endoscopy done. Also, my lab work always comes back fine when I get a CBC or CMP (which shows liver function). Also, the pain is not in the region of kidneys which would be the lower back/flank region. What confuses me is why the pain comes with certain types of alcohol but not with all. When I read up on Hodgkin's, as some of you suggested, I learned that consuming alcohol will cause the upper back pain flare ups associated with Hodgkin's but, I am highly doubtful that this is the explanation or diagnosis because my pain does not happen with ALL forms of alcohol, it is specific to certain kinds. Have any of you followed up with a doctor and learned anything?

Upper Back Pain with Alcohol consumption
I also have this and I am an RN. I only get it from Hard alcohol or Smirnoff Ice. My most common culprit is Margaritas. I believe it is gallbladder related. Only R side between shoulder blades to R arm & chest. Very debilitating pain and I have to remove myself from whatever setting I am in to grin and bear it. AWFUL. I do not have gallstones but perhaps I need a dexascan to evaluate function.

Painful urination
I am 34/male/hispanic. Healthy as noted by last physical. I have pain in the back kidney area when I drink a couple of beers. I am not a heavy drinker. After drinking a couple of beers enough to get a light buzz and then go urinate, a sharp pain in the back (kidney area) develops. But it is only painful during urination. I don't get the pain unless I drink alcohol and then urinate. I have been having this pain for about 10yrs and only while drinking alcohol. Any ideas? I think the pain is more severe with beer than spirits.

Excruciating back and shoulder pain after mixed drink
I have been scouring message boards trying to find an answer to my agony. Whenever I drink hard liqour or sugary mixed drinks, I am in AGONY. I have excruciating shoulder and back pain where my muscles seem to just tighten up and I get extremely hot and feel sick. It takes a while for this feeling to subside, and I always contribute it to sitting and drinking instead of getting up and walking around for some reason. Just the thought of my husband rubbing my shoulders when I start feeling that way makes me sick to my stomach. Has anyone else experienced this??? I have read many threads saying many people have stomach problems/possible ulcers, but the pain just radiates in my shoulders and back. I have always had back problems and pain with just being 24 years old, and hard liquor just seems to applify this. Occasionally beer will do this also, but wine never does. My husband always makes fun of me for this and says I'm acting like a baby - I am not a hypochondriac. The pain is so severe sometimes that not even laying down or stretching can make it go away. The best feeling ever is when the pain subsides! Sometimes I try to just keep on drinking in high hopes that the pain will disappear, but most of the time I end up just throwing away my drink and ending the night early. Any answers to this would be GREATLY appreciated! I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere.

Hawaiian Punch/Frozen drinks/Wine Coolers/Smirnoff Ice
I know exactly how you're feeling. Sugary drinks/wine coolers/frozen drinks does it for some reason I believe. Hawaiian Punch gave me the first episode when i was 9 or 10. It starts below the diaphragm and goes around to my back and up into my neck. I have to get on my hands and knees and lean on my head for relief. Happened to me yesterday from 2 small glasses of Pina Colada frozen mix. Only lasts 20-30 minutes. And I start sweating and feel really weak also.

Well, after researching I found the closest match to what you and I suffer from is Hodgkin's Lymphoma but, even then some of the circumstances and symptoms are a little different. I'm trying to pinpoint it without going to the doctor but it looks as if I may have to suck it up and go get checked out.

Lower back pain after drinking alcohol is most likely caused by dehydration rather than a issue with the muscles or bones of the back. Drinking water before, during and after drinking should help. In other words the pain is coming from tired kidneys.

Upper Back Pain with sugary alcoholic drinks
When I have over 2 sugary drinks.. margerita, Mike's hard lemonade, sangria.. I will get upper back pain. Pain starts at the base of the neck, then radiates along shoulder and down left arm. If I have the 3rd drink then I the pain feels like a spike going through my chest and I can hardly breath.

This has been happening for about 5 years, which is about when I started having GERD symtoms. This summer I had a heart calcium test where I was told I have a small Hiatal Hernia. I plan to have the hernia checked further and corrected.

thank god i have found thisd site an realise i am not the only one. it is a horrible pain an as a few of u have said people tend to think u are over reacting. i find drinking a glass of water and stretching the back helps relieve the pressure quicker. i have narrowed down the problem to pretty much be related to cider, especially the fruit ones, i avoid these now but sometimes still get the pain with other drinks. i have avoided the doctors until now as i always presumed he would simply say stop drinking, now i have seen the links to illnesses such as cancer i will deffinatley be going asap, i am only 23 but there is a history of the illness in my family, better to be safe then sorry as they say!!
i wouldnt say i have always had this problem, it started around four years ago now, i kind of expect it now when i go out and my friends who understand i am in pain know to leave me be till the pain is gone, happy to know though that i am not alone in this.

Hi Everyone,

I honestly thought I was the only person with this problem, I have had this for about 5 years now, and it started when I drank Rum and coke, so Then I changed my drinks to Archers, the same thing happend, so then changed it to Rose and now Vodka but it seems to happen with all of these spirits, The feeling is awfull, when Im out with my friends and it happens, I feel like i dont want to socialise and want to curl up in a ball, its lasts for 30 mins and then graduarly goes after that, and when it does its like i feel great, like nothing had ever happened, the pain starts in the middle of my back and then up to my shoulder blades, the only way I can decribe it is a burning/Achey feeling right through my back, and I can graduarlly feel it creeping up to my shoulder blades, I do get very hot too, maybe thats my blood pressure getting high?.its a unpleasant feeling really it is, and I wud rather go through child birth again than to have this happening for the rest of my like.
I just hope that scientist find out what this really is, and Im glad im not the only one with this problem.

Back/chest pain/weakness-sugary drinks,smirnoffs,margaritas,etc.
Hi, I know exactly what you're going through. I've got it from wine coolers, smirnoff ice, and even hawaiian punch when i was in grade school. Had it happen to me from drinking some kind of slushie wine stuff at an outdoor concert in 100 degree heat a year ago. Was so bad that i sat on the port-a-potty for 30 minutes until it went away. lol Don't mean to be intrusive but do you ever have to go to the bathroom during these episodes? I do but it really doesn't seem to help. It's such a weird feeling but once it starts you know its nothing normal! Good luck

Well for starters....i'd try not drinking more than a few drinks....for ALL of you. See what your "limit" is.

For instance, if you have just ONE drink...find out how much alcohol is in that. Does that ONE drink affect your back? Is your back starting to hurt a little?

Drinking isn't worth the back pain. You only have one back the rest of your life.

Plus, if it's that "high" you all are looking for with Drinking...that "buzz"...just wait until Marijuana becomes legal in your state....it's a lot healthier than ruining your kidneys.

Man... I thought I was the only person with this problem. I am 48 years old and I first noticed this issue when I was in my early twenties. I don't have any digestive issues, kidney stones, Hodgkins Lymphoma, gallbladder issues, GERD or anything else mentioned here. The only time I have this pain is when I drink a rum drink. Nothing else bothers me. It's excruciating... between my shoulder blades. I get nauseated and break out in a cold sweat. If I stop drinking the drink, it subsides in about 15 minutes. All these years, no one has been able to figure it out.

Backpain and Alcohol
Folks - This might help a few of you.

I developed a mild back pain when I was 21 and it got progressively worse. The most peculiar thing is that I get pain mostly on my right side and its particularly painful under the ribs.

It was a very difficult thing to diagnose - doctors tested me for every possible disease - kidney stones, bone fractures, gastro ailments, you name it.

It wasn't very clear initially but correlation between alcohol and backpain became obvious with time. A few weeks of abstinence appeared to make it better.

Finally a neurosurgeon diagnosed it. Between two of my spine vertebrae, the soft tissue that works as a shock absorber has really been thinning - its some sort of congenital thing that gets worse by alcohol consumption (doctor said the heat generated in stomach by alcohol consumption) destroys those soft tissues.

MRI Scans showed the problem and that explained the pain under ribs as they were connected to vertebrae that were bumping against each other due to lack of sufficient soft tissue between them.

Back Pain After Drinking Alcohol
This also may help a few of you -

I have recently been surgery after 3-4 years of back pain on the right side after drinking. The pain would without fail come on after a night out, start at the back right side then move round to the front and last for up to a few days. After originally being diagnosed by GP as kidney stones a renal specialist (after describing relation with alcohol n pain) diagnosed it as a classic PUJ obstruction.
It is a narrowing of the Ureter going out of the kidney and you are born with it, many people do not realise they have it until later on in life i.e drinking.

http://www.windsorurology.co.uk/downloads/ PUJ_obstruction_and_laparoscopic_pyeloplas ty_patient_information.pdf

This may not apply to all of you but looking at some of the posts but I once trailed these forums looking for an answer as well so hopefully may shed some light on a solution.

Back Pain
I'm a 24 yr old male, and I've had the same problem too for the past 5 years, after 4 - 5 (scotch & coke, or bourbon & coke) drinks my lower back aches, my upper back, and shoulder muscles tense up quite severely, I also have mild scoliosis (which doesn't help) and around that time I never gave my back any attention for years, ever since I been getting proper back massages, I could drink all night and the back pains would appear VERY RARELY and I would be lucky to feel a tiny bit of any aching.
I guess having bad knots in the back wouldn't help relief any back pain at all.
