Q: What can cause tension on the left side of the head and arou
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 13th, 2006
For the past 8 months I've been waking up with some sort of tension on the left side of my head and around the left eye. Some days it would be light pressure but some times it would be very tense and even radiate to the right side. The pressure would last the whole day and sometimes my vision would blur towards the end of the day. It really affects my concentration and sometimes I just can't express myself properly and it's really frustrating. I have some professional exams coming up this month and I'm struggling to revise.

I've been to a Neurologist and had a CT scan - my brain looks normal and they prescribed me Amitriptyline (anti-depressant) because they think it’s a type of chronic migraine. But that hasn't helped and so now I'm not taking anything for it at all.

I've tried acupressure and massage around the neck and shoulder-blades which helped for a few days but the pressure has come back. I've been to the opticians and they say there's nothing wrong with my eyes.

My sinuses have felt blocked for a while and I'm wondering if that could be the cause? I was prescribed Rhinocort nasal spray but that didn't help either. And now it's hayfever season I just want to rip my nose off - it's running constantly but my breathing still feels congested.

I also suspect that maybe it's because I use a computer all day, but I have new-ish glasses already. I have noticed that if I go to sleep with really tired eyes, my headaches in the morning are worse.

Also, could it be because of posture? If massage has relived the pain, could there be a problem with something pressing against one of the blood vessels around my shoulders or neck?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Chronic sinusitis may cause the syptoms that you describe; you have been already suffering from allergic rhinitis. You can visit an ENT-specialist. Antibiotics, corticosteroids, and local decongestives may be prescribed. It seems that nothing is pressing your blood vessels on your neck and shoulders.
