My friend is a 24 year old female who is having a problem with her throat after having oral sex with a new boyfriend. She went down on him and almost immediately afterwards her throat started to hurt. They did not use a condom so there is no allergic reason possibility from that. They did it again and it got worse, she says her throat is swollen now. She says that her tonsils and the part of her mouth they are connected to are hanging down and inflamed and closing off her air supply, they are bright pink and glossy. She is breathing through her nose now because her tonsils are now touching the back of her tongue. She can not turn her head in certain ways and she is coughing like crazy.......She would post this herself because she is very shy about these matters and also not good with computer

is this an std? If not, what is it?

Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hiv, and herpes can all be transmitted through oral sex. There are also a few others that can be transmitted if the mouth has come in contact with the anus.

Based on the fact that your friend had these symptoms following oral sex, it is a good possibility that it is an oral std. Many men are carriers of stds, and do not know it, because they do not present any symptoms. Have your friend see her doctor to get tested and treated.

If it is indeed an std, then most likely chlamydia, or gonorrhea. Those are the two most common stds. If it isn't one of those two stds, then most likely the guy had a build-up of another type of bacteria on his penis that caused her infection. Either way she should go see her doctor to get antibiotics.
