What causes clubbing of the fingers?

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis can cause clubbing. Considerations clubbing is associated with a wide number of diseases, although it is most often noted in diseases of the heart and lungs that cause decreased blood oxygen and skin blueness (cyanosis) or lung cancer. My dh has this from possible ipf. If anyone has info on this disease I would be very grateful. He is to have a biopsy in 4 months to verify diagnosis. Literature says he has an average of 4-6 years to live. Can this be true? No other symptoms: he's only 40.
