Problems With Hypoglycemia And Diet Posted: 05-10-06 13:39pm
Hi,
i am so gald to find a froum where someoe
can relate to my problems.
I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia in dec
of 2004. My mother is a type 2 diabetic
and diabetes runs her her family, none are
over weight.
My endocronologist put me on the south
beach diet phase 1, which is low crab and
higher protein. He also gave me one free
day a week to eat or drink a fews alcholic
drinks. About 3 weeks later had said I
could start having a couple times a week
some strawberries or melon. Basicly the
diet gets very boring. I am an american
who lives overseas from virginia, with a
long history of eating southern style
food. I soemtimes go off my diet and
eat something sugary or eat grains, it
always catches up with me. I would not
dare leave the house without a box of
grape juice either in my purse. 13 days
ago I had a blood sugar drop of 48, I
could not stop my hands and body from
shaking and my mom had to hold the glass
for me so I could drink 1/2 of a coke.
When I go low, juice does not seem to do
the trick. I am very often streesed out
and in a horrible mood. My life is very
stressful because I am an olny child who
takes care of her mother who is bi bolar
and very paranoid at times, plus I have 3
kids and a husband. Sress does seem to
make it worse. After my low blood suagr
drp 13 days ago, it seemed like it took me
10 days to feel better, even though I was
back on the south beach without cheating.
I need to loose another 18-20 pounds also.
My husband does not understand this
illness and gives me no support. His
attitude is "i would be better off as a
diabetic". The mood swings are terrible,
I don `t knw what else to do.
Thanks,
teresa

Read my diet plan below on this forum.
You should never use sugar to bring
yourself back up, the body has to learn to
work properly or you'll never get better,
the symptoms will continue to get worse if
you keep doing that and typically the
mental symptoms get so bad that you
yourself may begin acting like you're
bi-polar or even schizophrenic. I've
heard so many stories it isn't even funny,
so don't mess with sugar anymore, look at
my diet, there are certainly a number of
things you're eating that you shouldn't
be.

Hi stan,
i just read your diet. I have to check
if they have brewer`s yeast here where I
live. My endocronologist told me to
stay off all diet soda``s and anything
with artifial sweetners, splenda, equal
etc. I was drinking 1 and sometimes 2
cans of diet dr pepper a day and having
about 2 teas. Of splenda a day in coffee.
Is stevia ok? Let me give you a
example of what I am eating every day and
you tell me what I am doing wrong. I`d
appreciate it. Anyone on this forum may
chime in on this.
Breakfast: 2 eggs (any way I want), 1
slice of cooked low fat ham, 1 3 1/2 oz
can of v-8 or tomato juice, or a few
slices of tomato.
Snack. Almonds, (raw)
lunch: chicken (baked with rosemary , salt
and pepper), or a 4 oz piece of grilled
filet of beef. Salad(romaine, cucumber,
a little onion, tomatos, olives) and
balsamic vinager. A bit of avacado.
Snack: almonds (raw) or walnuts, pecans
dinner: 2 hard boiled eggs, or cottage
cheese, broccoli or boiled cabbage, celery
pieces and 1 to 2 teas. Light cream
cheese.
Snack, either almonds, walnuts , pecans,
all raw.
I sometimes have 1 to 2 ounces of cheese
with my lunch also, such as swizz, edam or
gouda.
I drink about 1 gallon of bottled water a
day. I live in a tropical country and it
gets hot here.

I think stevia is okay, i've heard health
freaks talking about supposed negative
effects of sugar alcohol, but there isn't
sufficient research on that issue. About
your diet.
1. Eggs are perfectly fine and the best
snack you can have if you're so low you're
going crazy. Try to get organic if
possible, but at least cage free with
omega-3.
2. Be careful of ham, it often is laced
with sugar, in fact I think pretty much
all ham has sugar in it. Read the label.
If it's a lunch meat, don't even touch
it.
3. I think v8 is fine as well as
tomoatoes as long as you stay in the
carbohydrate level you've selected.
4. Everything else through the vinegar
seems fine, some people have problems with
vinegar (all types), but if it seems okay
keep doing it. Apple cider vinegar is
actually supposed to help with sugar
control, so you can always try that if you
want. Balsamic actually makes me gag.
5. Be careful of all milk products. If
you seem okay with them, then go ahead,
but they tend to spike sugar very quickly
because they are basically a simple sugar.
Milk especially, straight milk can cause
severe reactions in some people within
minutes. Also, there are all the
problems with pasteurization and hormones
and such, look into it, it will make you
sick.
6. Not sure about cream cheese, read the
label to make sure there's nothing in it
that's on my list.
7. Everything else seems fine other than
the tea. Be careful of the tea, if it's
herbal with no caffeine or decaffinated,
it's fine, otherwise do not drink it.
Caffeine will cause a quick sugar crash,
usually within minutes.
8. Water intake is fine, keep drinking!

Thanks stan,
i wonder if it is possible to have a diet
soda once or twice a week? What is worse
nutrasweet or splenda? We have diet
sodas here made with both.
Also, is anyone having a problem with
constipation with these low carb diets? I
eat plenty of veggies, and drink plenty of
water, what else can I do? Do you think
it would be terrible of me to have popcorn
at the movies once or twice a month? I
don `t seem to have a problem with cheese,
I don `t eat much of it either and hate
milk. I used to drink 3 cups of coffee a
day, I now am drinking 2 cup a day with
cremora ( a tad). I am trying to get off
the coffee, it aint easy! I have not
broken my diet in 15 days, and I am
feeling better. 2 years ago, I was very
athletic, 2 1/2 hours(5-6 days a week) in
the gym, cardio and weight lifting and 3
hours( 3 times a week) a week of
kickboxing and self defense. I quit
because the gym here decided to not use
the air conditioner snd it was way too
hot, made me want to vomit, plus my mom
had a nervous breakdown and I had to be
with her. I am thinking about going back
to the gym, but maybe just weights. The
reason is it is just too hot here, and
cardio just makes me sweat too much and
wears me out. I wonder if it would be
safe to go back to the gym , say 1 hour of
weight lifting? If I do that do I need
to eat something special before/after. I
get scared just thinking that my blood
sugar will go down at the gym. Does
excess heat seem to bring on a hypo?
Appreicate any advice.

No, I use lewis labs, easily found on the
internet. Gnc may carry them. I don't
know about their brands, if you can show
me a label with the info of where it comes
from and such I can tell you if it's good
or not.

Hmmm, i'd be careful of that one.
Compare to this: http://www.Vitacos
t.Com/lewislabsbrewersyeast they have
stuff added in that gnc brand that i'm not
sure about. I think guar gum may cause a
problem, but I could be wrong, the other
one i'm not sure of.

No, absolutely not, guar gum is a sugar
that I would avoid, it's derived from
legumes, which I say on my list need to be
avoided at first. Psyllium husk is some
kind of plant, but I can't find any
information on what it does other than
help constipation. I'd avoid that brand.

Thanks stan, I was wondering about the
beets in this product. On gnc I searched
for brewers yeast and they have another
without the fiber added in tablet form,
but it mentions beets. My son is a
fitness buff and buys supplements here
from someone. I am going to see if they
sell it and what it contains. I think I
need to add vitamin b`s in my diet.

Careful of vitamin b tabs, they cause
serious reactions in some people, I was
one of them. Yes, they get the yeast
from beets, but it has nothing to do with
the beets. The yeast simply draws the
nutrients from the soil and beets but does
not retail anything to do with it.
