Seizure Control
Posted: 05-09-06 13:09pm

I've been getting seizures more frequently in the last years. It's now around 1 per 3 months. It's only happening when I wake up. I then have uncontrollable spasms.

I'm currently looking around the internet for maybe a medication that I can use when such a seizure might happen. I don't know if that exists, but it sounds to me as a better solution then taking daily medication. Going to a doctor will result in the risk of loosing my job since I require a car. The law dictates you should be 1 year seizure free in order to get your license back and I don't want to take that risk.

I have no idea what kind of epilepsy I have, but I hope to get it under control somehow. Any suggestions?

Take this for what it's worth, it's just my opinion....

You should see a doctor. If your seizure pattern is currently changing for the worse (increasing frequency) and you don't do anything to control it, it could get very, very bad.

My wife's seizure pattern has changed a *lot* over the last 10 years (frequency, type, severity, etc). She too used to only have tonic-clonic seizures about once every two weeks - always when she first woke up in the morning. But it can change. You cannot rely on past history as proof that you will never have one in the middle of the day (or while driving for that matter).

Hi there screwdriver I have epilepsy I am on daily meds and have been seizure free now for three years and yes you are right you lose your license for a year then if you are seizure free in that year you get you license back for three years and then three years after that which you have to fill in medical forms for the dvla. And by law you doctor must let them know if you do not yourself. But you cannot lose your job if you have let your boss know that you have epilepsy from the start then they cannot fire you. I know it is look bad with the though of not driving for a year but it does pass quickly I would say to you to go to your doctor and get it checked out think of it this way as well you could be driving one day and have a seizure and god forbid you kill someone or even yourself you would not wont that if you would like to get in touch with me my email address is p aul.Baird5@btinternet.Com I can give you some address and telephones numbers for helplines for more information hope this of help to you

Hi cwe amd slutpaul,

thanks for your replies.

Cwe....What was the result with your wife. Did she get daily medication or a specific medication to use when she feels a seizure coming up?

I know the best solution is to go to a docter and try to "solve" it like that. Thats' surely something that will need to happen in the near future, but I would like to understand from others if they experienced the same as I have and what was done to "solve" this?

Thanks for your feedback

Hi there screwdriver it is highly availablepaul here that made me lol, I know that you do not want to go to your doctor in case you lose your license as you need your car for your work, you could ask your doctor for something to calm you down i.E to help stop the spasms like diazepam very low dose it might help I hope that you do not lose your license as I know how that feels, I have to get mine renewed three years at a time but looking back on it now it is wroth it hope that you get the andwers you are looking for soon keep  and do try and not let it get you down

Hi there cwe I would be interested in your wife's story but I do not have your address for your wed site I would be grateful if you could post it. I do know that aeds needs to be absorbed into the bloodstream to reach the brain. I am on 1600mg a day of sodium valproate and 1600mg of carbamazepine {tegretol} it has taking a while for me levels to be stable I also get my serum levels checked often I am also on 20mg of diazepam {valium in the morning and 20mg of it in the night. I look forward from hearing from you with your site address. Thanks
