Q: When is it Safest to Administer a BCG-vaccine Injection to a
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 29th, 2006
My husband and i are both british and lived in UK all our lives. We came out to Kuwait to work for 2yrs and i became pregnant and gave up my job here, athough my husband is due to finish his contract this year and we will be returning to England at the end of November 06.

I had my baby girl here in Kuwait, she is 5months old now and we have had to give her routine vaccinations here in Kuwait, i have been keeping a record of the dates and vaccinations given to pass on to my doctor when we return to the UK.

However i am really worried and not sure what to do because the nurses here are asking to give my baby the BCG vaccination and i feel my baby is too young as they dont give the BCG jab in England until the child is 14yrs old. I told the nurse that and she said that in Kuwait they used to give the BCG jab before school entry at 4yrs old but there have recently been two cases of children becoming sick so the goverment in Kuwait changed the rule to give the BCG jab at 4 months old.

The nurse told me that it is my decision but the problem in kuwait is that there are many house maids and workers that come over here to work from Asia, India, Nepal, Phillipines etc.. and there have been case of disease being bought over from them and could be passed over to a child or baby which would be dangerous if that child had not had the BCG Jab.

I am not sure what to do as we only have 6 months left in Kuwait then we will return to England for good.
Will it be harmful to give my 5month old baby the BCG or should i just wait as we are returining to UK soon.
Or will it be safer to just give her the BCG???
What is the safest option???
I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO PLEASE HELP??
THANK YOU

Different requirements for BCG-vaccination exist in different countries. For example, there is no routine BCG vaccination required in the US at all. It is not harmful to give your baby a BCG-vaccine at this age because in many countries the BCG-vaccine is given during the first 4 months of life. You can also wait until you go to UK to administer the vaccine. Tuberculosis is not a very contagious disease. It is not likely that your baby becomes infected from TB if there is no one in the house from the countries you listed.
