I was on the depo pervera shot for 5 years; first shot at 18 in february 2000, last shot february 2005. I have not gotten a period since stopping the shot and was wondering if the shot still works as an effective birth control method until your first period or if it stops working in that capacity and the no period is from another source?

i would assume it would work until your period simply because the period symbolizes you have no more hormone/need more like how on a birth control pill package you have the week of placebos and then need a new package.

Not sure though.

Ovulation occurs approx 14 days before your period, so there is a risk that you could get pregnant before you even had a period.

A lot of women report problems after coming off the depo shot.

The best/safest advice is to use a barrier method of contraception such as condoms until you get your first period.

But if you are actively trying for a baby then just go ahead and forget about birth control however do be aware it can take some time for your body to return to normal after being on birth control for a long time.

Geez, lots of misinformation

depo is effective whether you're bleeding or not, the hormones are still there. I didnt have periods for years, dont worry

Depo can take two years to completely leave your body. Even though you start having periods you do not start ovulating right away. If you wish to prevent pregnancy as another suggested use a barrier meathod.

No no no no - if you miss your scheduled depo injection you can get pregnant.

Ask your doctor to put you on birth control pills - doctor's almost always put you on birth control pills after you go off of the depo injection to help to normalize your period. That's what 99% of doctor's due. I've never heard of anybody just stopping the injection. If they did that I guess they didn't discuss it with their doctor too extensively. But the pill will help to normalize your periods and you should be back to normal within 3 to 4 months usually.

Guys please - ask your doctor's these questions - there's a lot of misinformation posted on this thread. Don't mess with this stuff - it's better to ask your doctor and know the truth then to assume and get pregnant by accident. I know i'm offering advice here but I cannot stress enough that talking to your doctor about these questions is the best way to go!

i did everything you just said. And no they wouldn't put me on birth control after depo. They said my body needed to go back to normal on it's own! Some doctors may believe they should drug it up to trick it back into normal.. But not all!

I was put on birth control pills after coming off of the shot for two years. And after two months of being on I stoped the pills and within the first month of ttc I got pregnant. She gave me the pills to jump start my period so I could get pregnant. But sadly I had an ectopic pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage. And after that my period have been back to normal. And we are curtently in our first month of ttc since periods have gone back to normal.
