Can pain hurt?

Hello I am new here and I know that that question might be very confusing. I will try to explain it the best I can. I know that physical and mental pains are two different things, yet I was wondering if mental pain can physically hurt the human body. For example, in surgery people are put to sleep because the pain would be extremely intense, yet say the person (i know this would never happen but bear with me) had control over there body and no matter how much pain there was the person doesn't move or twitch or 'show' the pain. Take that into account and you rule out muscle, bone, and other problems that someone would come by flailing and doing whatever else people do when they are in pain. So what we know so far is that even though the pain is extremely intense, the person has control over the motor functions of the body; now onto the rest of my question. Can ‘feeling’ pain cause physical damage even though the person feeling the pain does not move, like can the stress or just the feeling cause something? Now I know that I have been blabbering on and on about this and I know that this is a terrible explanation of my question, yet there must be someone out there who can understand what I am trying to say. If you know what I am trying to ask and you know of a better way of asking it please tell me or post it. Thank you for your help, I will be awaiting you responses.
