Changing Aed's What to Replace It With
Posted: 04-21-06 22:54pm

Im getting off the phenobarbital soon. What's a good med to replace it with. Meds. I've taken: lamictal, keppra, topamax, tegretol, dilantin, depakote no success on these. Pheno has worked the best but my Dr. Says it's not a good med to be on. After all that i've read I have to agree with him.

I am sorry you have to change meds yet again. Has nothing helped at all? What new med is tried depends mostly on what kinds of seizures you have. If any of them have helped even a little bit it might help the neuro see which class has had the best help. (ie, sodium channel blocker, gaba inhibiter, etc)....

I hope that you can find a medication that really helps you this time around.

Have you looked into trying atkins or vns or to see if you could be a surgery candidate since meds are not helping?

Discription of Patient

I have clonic tonic and generalized mixed. I've had 3 right temp. Lope resections which have helped reduce number and severity. I was having 2-3 g.M.S daily. Now down to 4-5 g.M. Monthly. (off pheno. It's worse) but, it did come at a price. I lost half my vision, but, it was worth it. Last operation was last feb. And has help alot even though I almost lost the use of my left arm. Scary! My neuro surg. Was awesome. Dr. Ojeman at the univ. Of wa. Excellent staff!!!! I would recommend this option for anyone with similar condition to look into this procedure. Though im not seizure free I think with the proper med. I can be. I just need a med. That can replace phenobarbital with same control. Some meds. I've tried worked alittle, but, I couldn't take the side effects.

Thanks for explainging more.....Have you looked into any of the newer ones like neurontin, possibly lyrica I have seen a few try for some generalized seizures, zonegran is sometimes used for generalized seizures ( my daughter was one of them), felbatol is used for some as well....Seems like the list is so much shorter for generalized seizures than it is for partials....

I am sorry that the surgery was not the total answer but glad to hear that it did help.

I hope that it has helped some!!

Hoping that you can find something to help the rest of the way! I know there are more medications coming including a newer version of keppra, a newer zonegran with fewer side effects. There is mysoline, as well which is a form of dilantin, I think.

Hang in there
