A long time ago I would randomly get
extremely cold extremeties which would go
numb and turn white (usually my toes).
It wasn't a big deal as it went away in a
few minutes. This stopped for years
(i'd say this happened when I was 13),
including years in which I played football
and lifted weights.
Now i'm 19, a college student, and the
problem has returned. Only my toes do
it, and it only happens when i'm at my
dojo doing jujitsu. It seems frequently
to be after a fall (a "kip" for those
familiar) but its happened randomly at
other times too.
Along with that:
- fatigue. I could sleep for a good 10
hours and still take a nap during the day.
I hate this - I feel like i'm wasting
valuable time.
- shortness of breath working out. I'm
not in the best of shape (5'8 175) but i'm
not "fat" either. There is no reason I
should be getting out of breath faster
than some of the more clearly out of shape
people. Especially since I played
football from age 7 til age 14, and then
again from ages 17 to age 18 (and played
defensive back and running back). I've
slacked off lately with getting in shape,
but something doesn't seem right here.
I did notice the shortness of breath and
tiring easily during my latest football
stint.
- dizziness when tired. I don't mind
the shortness of breath so much, but what
gets me is that when I get tired and out
of breath, I get dizzy and can't bear to
stand.
- low quantity of urine. Now, i'm not
sure exactly how low, but I know that my
pee is usually less powerful and lasts
shorter than what I hear in the bathrooms.
Unless I hold it in all day until I
feel like i'm going to burst. Usual
bathroom trips produce urine, but not as
much as what I hear as being "normal."
i was thinking anemia, but with the
problems going back so far, i'm not sure
what disease could cause it that wouldn't
have shown up elsewhere in health
problems.
I was also thinking "iron deficiency" as
the latest outbreaks of problems have
happened when I moved in with my mom (not
a fan of cooking; ordered out a lot) and
now again while i'm at college and have to
live on dorm food.
In a list of symptoms of "iron
deficiency," I qualify under all except
one.
You could be iron deficient if you.....
..... Are unusually tired;
..... Have reduced ability to exercise
comfortably;
..... Have poor stamina;
..... Get frequent infections; or,
<------doesn't apply to me
..... If you are lethargic.
I've also had a sore tongue before,
frequently associated with iron deficiency
anemia. And I am a chronic nailbiter
(could that qualify as pica?)
any thoughts? Should I try taking iron
supplements to see if that helps? Or
should I see a doctor right away?
