Bad breath can often be the first sign of a disease. But how do doctors define bad breath and what are the major causes of bad breath?...

Q: Dental Treatment During Preganancy

I am 36 weeks pregnant and last week I cracked a side off of my tooth eating a lollypop. I am due to have routine blood tests next week with my midwife to check my blood iron levels and was wondering whether any dental treatments or anaesthetics will affect my test results or have any affect on my baby. Also is it safe for me to be given silver mercury fillings or would white composite fillings be more appropriate for me given my current condition?

Many thanks
emma

Hey emma,
i'm a dental assistant and we treat pregnant women sometimes. I don't think anaesthetic is harmful to you or baby unless you've had probs with it before (some people react badly to the adrenaline). About the silver fillings: I don't know aboutin the uk but in some countries they just don't use amalgam fillings on pregnant women at all. If you're worried you could ask your dentist to give you a temporary filling until after you have the baby.
