Q: New Smelling Urine After Allergic Reaction to Spermicide?!

I decided to try out a spermicidal condom with my bf awhile back, and lo and behold, I was extremely allergic. I got a uti as a result (lasted for 3 lloooonnnggg weeks) but during the uti and to this day, I have been having an odd smelling urine. I want to say that it is sweet smelling? But it also reminds me of ammonia. Or even weirder, cooking wine? When I went to see the doc for the uti he said my urine appeared normal (no sugar or protein), minus the infection. Now that the infection is gone, i'm wondering... Do condoms change the smell of urine? (i no longer use spermicidal ones o_o !)

Long time no see. ;)

condoms shouldn't have an effect on your urine. I also had a weird smell and some tingling for about 2 weeks after my uti went way and went back to the doctor, but of course, no infection. If you're drinking lots of cranberry/orange juice or not drinking enough fluids, that can change your urine (make it more acidic or concentrated.) if your urine is dark, dehydration is probably what's causing the strong smell. Diet can also affect the smell, so maybe you could try eating more bland foods and drink water instead of juice. Sometimes I find that my body smells change at certain times of the month, especially around my period.

By the way, urine has ammonia in it, so if that's what you're smelling, it's a good thing, it means everything is sterile. And antibiotics stay in your system for a while, so you shouldn't have to worry too much.
