Hello all. I am in need of some
opinions, personal experience, or support
this morning. I have had anxiety and
panic for about 10 years. I am now 31.
I've been taking paxil for 8 of those ten
years, with excellent results. Recently
though, my doctor switched me to a new
(different manufacturer) generic paxil
(40mg/day), and it feels like it's not
working. Here I am again...Struggling
with anxiety and panic - barely able to go
to work - worried about everything -
everything seems overwhelming - you
know...The usual. Has anyone here had a
bad experience with generic paxil? I've
been taking this new stuff for about 2
weeks now. Any input or help would be
much appreciated. Last thing...I recently
had a pretty bad sinus/upper respiritory
thing going on, and took a few different
kinds of sinus medicine + nyquil. Do you
think that taking these other medications
might have interfered with my paxil?
Thanks again, aaron.

No, I never tried it but I would like to
ask you if you can tell us your experience
with medication since you've been on it
for 10 years. Do you have crisis when
you are taking them or they really work
well for you? I would appreciate your
thoughts.

Hi worrier4.
The paxil has really done wonders for me.
Once I started taking it, I began to feel
like the old me...Pre-panic. The only
side effects I had were: about 20 lbs.
Weight gain, and lack of sex drive. The
lack of sex drive went away after about 2
or 3 months, but i'm still holding-on to
the weight.
I started out at 40mg/day, then a few
years later went to 30mg/day. I then
tried to drop to 20mg/day, and that wasn't
enough for me (keep in mind, i'm 6' 4"
tall and weigh around 240). I really had
a bad anxiety "episode" on the 20mg, so we
went back to the 40mg and that's where
i've been since. I began having pretty
severe anxiety over the easter weekend,
and am now worried that the paxil isn't
going to work for me anymore.
I have had peaks and valleys while taking
the paxil, but never as low as I was
before I started taking it. Eating seems
to really affect my anxiety (i am
hypoglycemic). As a matter of fact, I
have made a vow to myself not to eat any
refined sugar for the next month - we'll
see how I feel in a few weeks.
I have bsically decided that I will
probably need to take medicine for my
anxiety for the rest of my life...And i'm
ok with that. It's better than the
alternative!
Let me know if you want me to eloborate on
anything.

Try to talk to your pharmacist and your
insurance company and your doctor, mainly
your doctor 1st, if he specifies
non-generic on the prescription then you
should get the real thing even though it
might be a little bit of a fight with your
insurance company.
Have you tried effexor or anything else,
after 10 years, I would think your body
would become immune to paxil but I am no
dr and we are all different.
Good luck!
Keep us posted.

I Am On the Generic Paxil Posted: 04-20-06 10:46am
It is the second time I try it.. I used
to take paxil but then could not afford it
any more.. So I took the generic kind for
a while, I didn't think it was the same..
I got anxious again and was having trouble
dealing with little changes in life and
rutine.. .. Then I actually went off
it... Now I am back on it, but terrified
to gain weight.
Do you have any experience with this since
you where on it for so long?
I exercise daily and eat well.. But I
really dont want to put on any weight..
Any thoughts?

I was on the generic paxil for a little
over three years. Initially it helped me
cope with my situations, but after a
while, I felt it wasn't enough. My doctor
upped the dosage from 20 mg. To 30 mg.
Well, that worked very well. Once I felt
that my depression and anxiety was under
control, I went back to 20mg.
What I have foind out is that some
generics do not work like the real thing.
For some reason, some generics just are
not as effective. It might be worth the
extra money to get back on what works for
you.
Talk to your doctor.
