No One Else to Ask
Posted: 04-18-06 08:31am

Im an 18 year old woman in a not very serious relationship... 2 weeks ago I found out that im pregnant and straight away I decided on abortion...
Now the abortion date is getting closer but I feel I have no choice, I no I will have done damage to the baby with the amount of alcohol I drink at weekends and I also use illegal drugs - only recreational - but all the same dangerous to an un born baby..

What are the chances ive done damage.. Id say I use cocaine once a weekend and I drink thurs-sun on average 7-8 pints of lager ot 2 bottles of wine..
Please help because im beginning to have second thoughts asbout the abortion.. Although I am not stable enough to cope with a disabled or ill child

i think the alcohol alone will mess your child up pretty bad.Marijuana isn't bad,i have known a lot of girls who still smoke weed while they're preggy and their kids come out fine, but coke and alcohol? Not good.I think this is a situation where abortion should be acceptable. When you found out you were preggy did you continue to do all the drugs and alcohol? There is a chance your child will be normal but very slim.I don't think people will give you a lot of sh*t about the abortion unless you knew about the pregnancy and still did the drugs or if you wanted an abortion just because.

My friend's son is slow. The best diagnosis the doctors can give her is that he has .Asperger syndrome - but he also has adhd and multiple other issues. Basically he is 20 with the .I.Q of a 5th grader. But he is not retarded - the doctor's say. She smoked pot for the first 6 months of her pregnancy and she regrets that every day of her life. Her son will live with her forever because he will never be capable of having his own life outside her home.

The reality is, you won't even know about these conditions until the child is born. Some people will tell you their kid was just fine and they did drugs - and other people will tell you their kid is screwed up from them.

A family member of mine did cocaine her entire pregnancy. One particular night it put her into labor and she had a blue baby that had to be on oxygen for 6 months. He is now 18 and he is fine. But the first few years of his life he was constantly ill and always in the hospital.

Good luck whatever you do.

The best bet is is to talk to a professional in a situation like this. Their is always a 50% chance of a baby being born without problems anyway and in your case probably more even though I am not a Dr. Probably going to the abortion forum would be better but the bottom line is that it is your choice and it is between you and your Dr. You have a lot to think about and to ask yourself.
I do wish you the best in your decision!

Thanks for the advice fromsome of you.. I was un aware of an abortion forum and didnt mean to cause offence.. The doctors now want me to go for a scan to see how far gone.. I think this is rather odd as most people dont go for a scan til later on??

Also if doctors can do tests what stage in pregnancy and will it be to late to abort?

Well you didn't offend me! I think it's like 15 or 20 weeks to be able to abort. How far along are you?(sry if you already said it)

Just noticed you're in the uk so I can answer this!

You can have an abortion up until 24weeks here but it isn't advised that you wait that long - the procedures are increasingly difficult as the pregnancy goes on. Abortions past 24weeks can only happen because of severe maternal health problems or severe fetal abnormality.
If you have mentioned abortion then the doctors do a scan as early as possible to see what gestation you are (you don't have to go through with the termination though because you've had your scan - you can change your mind at any time before the procedure begins.
I'm not sure what the chances of damage are but I reccommend you speak to your gp about it. Figure out all of your options before deciding on anything.

Mollie x

I agree with sandyallen. Drugs and alcohol are of course bad for a baby, but think about how many people use drugs/alcohol before they even *know* they're pregnant? I know I had a drink or two (quite the understatement) before I found out I was pregnant, but I was in fact pregnant.
It really depends. It can have an affect on the baby or it can not. If you're continuing to use the drugs, the longer you use them the more the chances are hightened. You could give birth to a drug addicted baby, deformed, etc. But you could also not.
