My 16 month old son had a seizure last night due to a high temp from an ear ache, or so the doctors think. Is he now prone to developing epilepsy, or is epilepsy caused by some other way?

See this website ...
As a child, I had febrile seizures. I did NOT develop epilepsy, although that is a possibility in some (see the article at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/ar ticle/000980.htm).

However, I am currently at Cincinnati Children's Hospital with my 14-year old son who has epilepsy (diagnosed in Feb 2004).

He had his first of two surgeries this past Friday and is due for the second one on Wednesday. The meds are not controlling his seizures to this point and they feel that surgery is his only option.

I pray that your son grows out of his seizures as I did. I have lived a full, normal life.

Dear Jannakay
Please don’t worry to much.
Majority of febrile seizures (FS) do not turn to an epilepsy.
No more then 3 % of real epilepsies started with FS.
Commonly anticonvulsant treatment is not necessary. Only drugs to lower temperature are pertinent. If you son have other problems in neurological status you must consult with you family doctor.
