WOW. I had no idea so many other people had this problem!! I've noticed my face being crooked since.... age 14 or 15 (I'm almost 18, now) and although no one else sees it, I can see it as plain as day! I've been working on my self-esteem so it doesn't bother as me much anymore, but today I took a self-portrait and it seems that my face has gotten even MORE crooked!

I was so worried about my jaw crooked, I once went to my doctor about it - like, my jaw can move INCREDIBLY when I lean it to the left, but it hardly moves at all when I move it to the right. My doctor said that I have more jaw muscle on the right, and I took X-rays, but there was no TMJ or anything wrong, so he said I was fine.

But now, looking at these pictures, it's not just my jaw that's crooked! My eyes and nose, too!

I'm actually wondering if something dangerous and medical is going on, because seriously, it seems like the left half of my face has dropped significantly. I'm really worried.

Here's a picture:

ht tp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c85/pirate guns/crooked1.jpg

ht tp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c85/pirate guns/crooked2.jpg

To me, the photos look like they are a full-frontal, but maybe head is tilted a little... regardless, that is STILL really crooked!

Hi robokira, i hope you don't mind, but i took your picture and straightened your face... it is full frontal, but your head was slightly tilted, so the vertical and horizontal lines you drew show that your eyes are not leveled, your nose, and so forth. But believe me, they're fine. I did this to show you. Here's the link to your picture that i re-did the lines to:
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh312/b ianitas9/robokira.jpg

I know what you mean about being able to move the jaw a lot to one side, but not so much to the other. In my case, i can move it so much further to the left than to the right. Your jaw seems to be just a tiny bit deviated to the left as well. It's not as bad as mine, though. So i guess you kind of have what i have but way less severe. At least your upper lip is in line with everything else. Also the corners of your mouth are in line. I can only tell that the middle of your chin is a little to the left. And pretty much only noticeable when lines are drawn on your face... I can see why no one else notices it.
Maybe get checked to make sure it doesn't get worse (not that it's bad right now, as i said, i can see why no one notices). I think mine got worse over the years. But your doctor said everything's fine... maybe get a second opinion?

Do you have crowded teeth by any chance?

I have this too. The right side of my face looks compressed. The upper lip is raised on one side. My eye is squished. Nose isn't the same length on both sides, and it tilts to the left. I can see it a bit now even with a single mirror (very slightly), but I have to take a long, hard look. I've been complimented on my face, but what I see with two mirrors is completely disfigured. And, of course, I look bad in pictures. It is so confusing..

lol. I know, i've been told i have a very pretty face, and some people have even asked me if i'm a model 'cause my face looks familiar to them... And i don't think it's sarcasm, haha. Of course there's lots of people who say 'you could be a model' to people who couldn't ever be (like myself, i mean, i'm crooked, c'mon!), but THEY think i'm cute, obviously.. It IS confusing.

I love how active this topic is. Clearly my asymmetries are still here and blatant as ever, but it feels good to know that other people experience what I experience on a day to day basis.

I must think about my face every few minutes, and I won't deny that it's vanity in its worst manifestation: self-consciousness, a fear of looking ugly, or people catching your bad side, or looking straight on, or smiling crookedly, etc. It sucks, and I wish I could fix it, but I'm 19 and I don't have the funds or the faith to try plastic surgery (I've narrowed my greatest problems down to the eye, mouth, and ears).

AGHHHHHH. I hate it. I hate being so self-conscious and yet I can't stop! My face is so damn "feminine" or soft that if the slightest thing changes, my entire face looks different... with most guys, their jaws (for example) are prominent enough that some bloating won't throw much off. But for me, and my lack of jaw-definition, or cheek bones, and with the extreme length of my face, it's just so easy to be ugly and so hard to look good.

I really hope there'll be some solution in the near future, or maybe if I do cave and get plastic surgery, they won't botch it up. That would kill me indeed.

Here are some pictures:

(good side)

...f**k, I don't even have any pictures of my bad side. Pathetic! here's a full frontal though:

The Lord does not create JUNK...........I am sorry, but I have to be honest and blunt here. You guys look just beautiful to me. Everyone in reality has 2 different sides to a face. There are so many people born with real deformities, that the ones you are even trying to refer here are NOTHING. You guys, both of you look like wonderful happy and NORMAL people with very nice faces. There is noting wrong wiht either of your faces and I would be most proud to have either of them.......so don't evne thinkg about wasting your money or going through the pain and agony of reshapin/rebuilding what the lord has created.........You need to learn to love and appreciate the real you..............

I wish I could edit my post because I didn't realize how obscenely large my photo was.

Also those are the best examples, and probably the least "true" examples of what I look like. I know that I'm not hideous or disfigured, but it just sucks to have that "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" affliction that makes me feel like two different people. It's the most deeply superficial split and I'm not sure how to glue it back together...

I recently realized it's a cranial issue. I have more bone on the left side of my face than on the right, which leaves my left eye rounder and closer to the hairline (the left side being my bad side). I've photoshopped worse pictures numerous times to mirror my left/right sides, creating two entirely different people, and one of them is very alien while the other is perfectly normal.

I guess since we all have a "good side" and a "bad side" we should be happy, but it's the pessimism that makes me wonder if I'd rather just be plagued with a "normal," but symmetrical face.

Hey winst. I really think that having one side of your face a little wider than the other is completely normal. Those are the 'normal' assymetries. Your face in itself is totally symmetric. What i do see there, is the ear thing you mention. One is a lil' bit higher than the other. I wouldn't bother getting plastic surgery if i was you... based on your pictures you look normal & symmetrical enough!
I don't know what you mean by 'alien'... maybe post a picture in which you think you look alien like?

assymetry
Posted: 03-18-08 11:19am

I have the same problem. The whole double mirror thing, the weird photos... What causes mine though is a crossbite with two molars in the very back of the right side of my mouth. This shift caused my right condola (ball and socket jaw joint) to develop smaller than my left, so my entire right jaw is smaller and tilted to the right. Of course, nobody notices, and wouldn't point out regardless, but if I made them stare at me long enough I could probably convince them. The thing is, no one stares at your face as long as you do, so theyre not looking for imperfections (unless they are completely OCD). The only thing that will correct it is painful, expensive jaw surgery and 2 years of othodontics. I'm already decent looking, so this is entirely not worth it. The position of your teeth and jaws dramatically effects all the different aspects of your face, so a bad bite will make everything seem out of whack. You have a couple options: pay 17,000 for orthognathic surgery, pay for your kids to have braces when they're young to prevent this from happening again, or just learn to accept yourself for who you are, and realize that no measure of obsessing over it will help ANYTHING. It's a waste of time and brain space. If you're not a supermodel, develop yourself in more meaningful ways. Who cares right? Everyone gets ugly over time anyway... Concentrate on your good features... Insecurity is far more unattractive than a millimeter or two of unnevenness. Plus, everyone's face has some degree of assymetry, if they notice they just don't talk about it. If someone points out that your face is not even, tell them they suck at life. Because obviously anyone that would say that indeed sucks at life, and needs a personality transplant.

to come off as self-righteous or condescending. It's frustrating because I was dealing with the same issues for a long time...and still am from time to time. I am just trying to adopt a more positive outlook and except the stuff that's out of my control. It is not easy that's for sure. It's funny because I was actually considering paying that ridiculous sum of money! Then I figured I'd rather spend that money on college. I can't believe I almost chose to mutilate myself in the futile pursiut of physical perfection than get an education... That would've been hard to live down for me. Maybe if I was a billionaire and never had to work things would be different, but for now, se la vie.

really asymmetrical - but NOT ugly
Posted: 03-18-08 18:00pm

I'm female and 28. I have a really asymmetrical face, my jaw and cheekbone on my left side are more defined and thicker and longer than on the right side. And there's a hump on my nose which is kinda jagged on the left and more soft on the right side. Furthermore my left eye looks always a bit smaller and tired than the right eye. Oh, and my lips are thicker on the left. And left nostril smaller than the right one. So contrary to most people I prefer my right side. And there is really not a single feature in my face that is symmetrical. Still I'm not like rightaway ugly. I have a nice slim body and my hair is good, too. I never realized how asymmetrical my face was until I purchased a digi-cam. Since then I took hundreds of pics of my face. Changed sides on the computer, did some morphing etc. There's no denying: my face is extremely asymetrical and once somebody has noticed they will hardly be able to ignore. Some years ago I had a friend (a fellowstudent, I study law - and law students are all about looks). She felt she was too thick, didn't like her body but she had a pretty face. Not much expression in it, boring but pretty and symmetrical. That nerd started insulting me, like: "Stop looking that ugly" and "Your HAIR looks good on that pic" I knew, it was because she was jealous of my attractive body, although I never said anything about it. I ended the relationship because I couldn't take it anymore, but the whole sh*t left scars. I cannot possibly tell myself that I'm the only one who notices the asymmetry. It has happened twice that attractive guys were hitting on me and then saw my face from the worst angle and kinda shrinked back. Like "Oh, there's something wrong." the thing is I'm an attractive appearance and I get not too little male attention, but there are these flaws in my face and it constantly bothers me. I cannot afford any plastic surgery, but if I had the money I guess I wouldn't hesitate long. Nobody deserves the way they look. It's russian roulette. But you guys, kirrebeachbum and winst: I don't see any serious problem with your faces really. And being males you are less likely to be reduced to the way you look.

a mirror question and a comment for winst..
Posted: 03-20-08 12:50pm

winst..from your two pictures your face looks perfectly symmetrical..your ears and everything included...your hair slightly goes to one side, so that could be why you perceive yourself to be assymetrical

also I have a mirror question...okay people have said my photos looks symmetrical from both sides, and I can see that now looking at them, although my nose is still slightly crooked but i don't care about that...but my question is when I hold a handheld mirror in my hand, and stand in front of a big bathroom mirror with the handheld mirror, and I use the handheld mirror to look at the sides of my face (not the front obvi and not the profile view, but half way between the front and the profile view), my right side I think looks VERY GOOD and my left side looks so retarded...mainly my hair, forehead, nose, and jaw..it just looks like it's def. not symmetrical....

does anyone know what's up with this?? =)

hey kirrabeach! Thank you for telling me i'm normal looking, lol. But no... you see that my neck looks off, well, it's because my jaw is off. I guess you could see it more clearly if i had not cropped the picture. In the whole picture you could see my eyes, and see that everything else is aligned, while my lower jaw and mouth aren't.
I usually tilt my head in a way that what seems to be crooked are my eyes and nose. I look as if my right eye is a lot higher than the left, and my nose totally points to the right, and my mouth looks ok. But i read about tmj and found a drawing explaining it, and it looked exactly like me! it says that when people have a deviated jaw they tilt their heads and even the whole posture of the body changes to compensate for the imbalance. In this picture i was actually tilting my head to the 'right' position, so you guys could see more clearly that my mouth and jaw is off to the left.

I know you told us we couldn't possibly say this, but, in your two last pictures, you look the same!!!
You don't look retarded in either one of them, nor asymmetrical. You look fine, really!!! I'm just not seeing what you see... Goes to show you that we are far more critical of ourselves than other people are, don't you think?

kaktus: maybe you could post a picture too?

First thing, Robokira, kirrabeachbum(especially), and winst.. you look perfectly normal at a glance. Basically I wouldn't worry about first looks when you meet people. There are asymmetries in most faces which create, in my opinion, attractive visual deviants from the norm. However on the average face those are nearly impossible to point out without measurements. On faces with above average asymmetries I still think it's hard for anyone to tell easily, let alone get wierded out by it. At worst you might seem unnattractive to a few people but I really really doubt anyone sees your asymmetry so quickly. I really can't emphasize how "normal" you look to me.

It's about time people began to bring this issue to the surface on the internet. I remember looking up my problem years ago and finding no one else like me.

I'm a 22 year old guy with an asymmetrical face, I almost can't remember not knowing about it. Even since my elementary school days I noticed my head seemed to tilt slightly to one side in photos. One day I came across the 2 mirror trick which clearly pointed out everything, my eyes, my ears, nose, brows, skull... it was so clearly off.. I could see where it stretched and compressed so easily. There's an endless bag of drama on that side of my life.( no pun intended *Sigh*) typical highly anti-social issues... etc.. photo days at school...

I'm sure my specific problem comes from my sleeping posture as a baby, causing my head to develop asymmetrically. It's good to know the technical names people use like plagiocephaly.. and variants.

You know what's cool though...
It's kind of funny how these things shape your life though, (personality, quirks, thoughts...) for example my problem helped me develop my artistic side in many ways... for one it probably magnified my obsession with beauty which pretty much turned me into a damn good artist, someone who appreciates the human form, the human face, symmetry and asymmetry. I've studied nearly every plane the face, the skull, scrutinized over every detail... just to understand how and why it all works.

Biani.. I once heard/read about how women tend to be more attracted to symmetry( in the context of attraction). I think for that reason, you can point it out so clearly on yourself and probably others. You simply can easily spot asymmetry and it probably bothers you a hell of a lot more than it should. Honestly, I can imagine your asymmetry being similar to Shannon Doherty, who I think looks gorgeous and I never even noticed her problem until someone pointed it out to me. ( you girls are so lucky with your long hair styles btw...) hmmm I really hope you don't think Doherty is ugly...

As for me...At this point I'm 100% sure anyone can tell I have an asymmetric face with the naked eye,the only question is the severity of it... *sigh which is enough to keep me fairly anti social. I worry that people may avoid me... so I normally avoid them... :/

Don't get me wrong I'm very upbeat, happy, spiritual, in decent shape, and I've learned to really not care most of the time...but some days suck more than others...
It just frustrating having to deal with normal " am I ugly issues" with this on top of everything!! Sad

Anyway guys/girls, nice actually talking about this thing... I'd post a picture but my confidence is so low right now. In another post!!

Ugh.. i had just written a long post on this, and i lost it somehow!!!
Confused
Since i'm to lazy to write it all again, to sum up:

Opposing: i don't think doherty is ugly. I have never noticed her asymmetry even knowing that one of her eyes looks smaller or something. I actually looked that up on the internet just now, and found a page dedicated to her asymmetry: http://www.shashachu .com/Shannen/index.html
But on another page i read that what's actually wrong with her face is her chin too. I'll look into that. I'm obsessed now with this stuff, haha.

I hope you can post a pic of yourself too...
