same here
hello - - wow this thread is really something. I honestly thought I was the only person in the world that's feeling this way.
I am so self-conscious about this.
I had a surgery on my lower jaw a couple of months ago... and as a result of that, the right side of my jaw seems to be a little larger than my left. If I look back at pics before my orthognathic surgery, I can see that my right was slightly larger than my left, but hardly noticeable. Now, I feel this is very noticeable and it is tearing me apart. This sucks! I plan on having surgery in the future to have that corrected. I know that I need surgery on my top jaw, it kind of dips a little into my face. This was not corrected when I had my orthognathic surgery because the surgeon felt it wasn't a really good idea, I'm still debating wether or not I should have this corrected.
I HATE looking at myself on those folding mirrors where you can see all angles. I dont think I'm as messed up as I see myself on those damned mirrors.
If it helps any, I have read that Botox is also being used to one's masseter muscles, allowing them to slightly "shrink". This may help a little, but I have seen xrayx of my lower jawbone and I think I'd need my jaw to be shaven.

how to post pics
to post pics, you would have to upload them by using a third party site (ie photobucket)
once your images are uploaded, copy the IMG link and just paste it on your message.

Joining the family
Hello, guys.I've been reading this topic for a long time, but never said my opinion. There are so many people who share this pain.I think we shouldn't look in the mirror as musch as we do,beacause we look normal like everybody. The double mirror thing is not real,it isn't the reality, the mirror is 2d and we live and see 3d right. Also nobody sees like through a mirror,so don't worry if you look crooked in the double mirror.
For me-I have a asymmetrical face, the one side is crooked and it is at least 30mm bigger and 10mm higher than the other, but nobody ever told me that something is wrong with me or that I'm ugly.
I guess even if we are asymmetrical, the mind of the other people makes our faces symmetrical.Maybe that is it.So lets live our lives happy and forget about the odds we have, Smile. Hope that helpped.Cheers!

post a couple of varied angled headshots....

i'll provide a straight and fair assesment!!!

but is this what you really want..?
i do sympathise with you.. i too thought i was the hottest kid in town in the mirror...but my photos made me cringe....asked a true friend to be straight up with me.....was told i was extremely good looking and got lots of attention from the ladies.....
1 week later...see a new photo of myself...back to square one again.
i will offer anybody here my true unbiased opinion, in detail if you like..!!!!!!
but who knows how long the comfort and reasurance of others comments will last.

who knows.. maybe it might help you?

Holy shizz i thought i was always alone. seems to me a lot of you talk about having asymmetrical jaw's and lips. But get this, i have extremely uneven eyes..its seriously hurrendous and i hate it. Because your eyes are suppost to be your charming point the first thing people notice about you are your eyes. && thats what people especially look at when there talking or looking at you. Which i hate because i seriously try to avoid making eye contact with people because i dont want them to notice my uneven eyes

although i have never had any of my friends point it out to me. ive only had 1 friend along time ago say that my eyes are uneven and then another friend like 2 years ago said there was something wrong with my eyes.

but people always say im so pretty and gorgeous i just dont get it.

ugh im so obsessed with it though

atleast i know im not alone =[

To all who think that asymmetry is nothing to worry about. Just google "facial asymmetry" and spend hours reading the research.

Asymmetric people are prone to depression, drug abuse, social reclusion and a host of mental disturbances. They are also less healthy and are worse lovers. There is plenty of research out there, enjoy the reading.

There are many theories out there but asymmetry is linked to developmental instability in utero. Toxins, alcohol, tobacco, stress and gene mutations all affect development of the foetus and what is going on inside the womb is critical for later life.

Basically, you are doomed for life and facial asymmetry is actually a sign of defective genes. I could pamper it for all you guys, but the research pretty much says it like that. No one is perfectly symmetrical but any deviation from perfection signals instability amongst critical phases of development. Some slight asymmetry is acceptable, look for fluctuating asymmetry and directional asymmetry.

Oh, and I too have some degree of asymmetry. I have done plenty of reading on the subject and have met some very asymmetric people. I would really reccomend reading on the subject although those prone to depression might as well stay away from it.

everything on my body appears uneven
I don't think you're the only person with that "uneven" problem. My face is uneven, as anyone who looks at me would notice. My left eye is considerably larger than my right one, and one side of my nose is more prominent than the other. my lips are weird. The top lip turns to the right, and the bottom lip turns to the left. One of my eyebrows goes up, and the other thicker eyebrow goes down. One of my feet is wider than the other, and the bones of my feet go in very different directions, and I noticed this since all my shoes, such as flip flops, show the differences in my feet. One ear protrudes further ourward than the other.
Obviously, I have a lot of problems with appearance. And like you, I've had people let me know that I was beautiful, or "pretty" as a lot of people have described me. I cannot believe that anyone would find all this asymmetry attractive, but I have to figure out why they tell me I'm good looking. I remember a few times in the last 3 years, people just randomly came up to me to tell me that I'm "pretty." I honestly don't understand how they see that beauty. When look in the mirror, I am sometimes disappointed, but at times I like what I see. In pictures however, I look bad. I still don't really know how my face appears in person, but I know it's definitely out of proportion.

WOw.
I think we focus too much on the phisical world and forget the spiritual world. The one that will NEVER end. These bodies are not who we are. We dwell in them only for a moment while we inhabit this earth. Shortly, all will pass away. All, except for who we truly are. Let's seek the Lord that we might live forever.

asymmetry
WOW. After ten years beating myself up about my uneven jaw, i've finally found others with the same issue.
i've always been told i am handsome and have always managed to end up with the girls i've wanted; but i've held on to a private self hatred about my different sides to my face. From about the age of fifteen, the right side of my jaw continued to grow outward. I could never see the issue in the mirror, but when photos were taken or i saw myself in a mirror with a 90 degree turn, it was plain how serious the problem was.
i am 26 now and for the past three years have been seeing a facial surgery specialist. i have not yet undergone surgery, but have had many scans and x rays that have proved a clear overgrowth of the right mandible. the muscle on the right is also much larger and stronger. I now only chew on the left hand side of my mouth to try and balance it. i talk to people out of the left side of my face and i am privately very very depressed.
has anyone else had surgery?
It's very nice to find i'm not the only one

apparent ugliness (actually mirror distortion)
I had the same problem ever since I saw myself in the "true" reflection (2 mirrors angled at 90 degrees). However, I have just found several web sites (after googling "true mirror image") which clearly explains why the image we see is distorted/asymmetrical to the vast majority of people. Our faces are NOT that assymetrical at all! Any asymmetries that we do have (and everyone, except maybe supermodels..which is less than 2% of the population, have them) is twice as apparent than what is actually there. Please, if you're like me and you've stressed over this 'apparent ugliness' like I have for years, please read up about the "true mirror" (which is the same as mirrors at 90 degree angles to each other) at the below site and others.
Remember...what you see in that image is NOT what others see!

I am so happy i'm not alone. I am 13 and i feel so ugly sometimes when i look in the mirror i look fine, but when i use two mirrors i look horrible and deformed on the right side of my face. I think it has something to so with my cheeks, I wish there was something i could do but not much at my age.

Wow. I have the same problem. I have a square face and my left side is more pronounced than my right side. everytime i look at my sides its like seeing two different faces. And I really hate taking pictures also. i think i'm very hideous, but most people think that i'm cute. its really confusing. since i don't know who to believe, the picture/mirror or people's opinion.

Anyways, digital cameras actually will detect and interpret the features of your face, like your facial bone structure and skin. so it's easy to see asymetry. we, however focus on the face as a whole, so little details like an overgrown jaw(unless its really obvious) is hard to see.

I actually just got braces and, I can definitely tell you that it definitely help a lot. my right jaw seem to have develop a little bit. so I can definitely say that our bite has something to do with the asymetry in our faces. i might consider surgery later on though...

everyone's face is slightly asymmetrical...
so get over it! Other people will not notice your minor flaws and imperfections unless they consciously look for them and stare at you for a long period of time. We are our own worst critics. Stop gazing at the mirror and worrying about minor physical imperfections and go outside to live life to the fullest! Nothing is sexier than confidence Smile

Amazing...
Wow, and I thought I was the only one in the world with this problem. It makes me feel a little bit more comfortable hearing about the double mirror effect, which I've been looking at on nearly a daily basis. I would look at the one side of my face and see a very handsome guy, then I look at the other side and I see this deformed "thing". In the past I use to get really upset over it, and wish there was a surgery to correct it. Another interesting note too is that I never had this facial structure when i was younger... it all came about after puberty... anyone else relate to that?

All in all, i think we can all agree that we see it pronounced 100x worse than anyone else. We see the double mirror trick, and see the exaggerated angles and bad curves of our jaws/eyes/cheeks etc. But if anyone knows of any case that had been corrected, please inform us or post a link! Thanks!

uneven face
The condition is called hemifacial microsomia - where one side of the face doesn't develop properly and cases can range from mild to severe. Google it. Surgery to fix this condition is considered "reconstructive" surgery and NOT cosmetic surgery since most people are born with it.

This is the 2nd most common facial problem after cleft lip.

HEMIFACIAL MICROSOMIA - google it.

Asymm & broken nose from wisdom teeth extraction!!
I have the same exact problem I thought I was the only one!! My face has always been asymmetrical but one side is pretty nice. I am actually freaking out right now because i just realized that my nose is crooked from my wisdom teeth extraction last year! The stupid surgeon broke my nose and I'm just now realizing it!!! For a few months now, I have noticed that my nose is crooked...it was always asymmetrical, but lately more than usual...because of this!! I am putting the pieces together, because I took a picture when my face was a swollen and looking at the picture at the time I said to myself "huhhh...never realized my nose was a little crooked?" But really it never was. I don't even know what to do. It's already bad enough that the molar in front of one of the extracted wisdom teeth cracked about 2 months after the surgery, but this too? I also have been having trouble breathing, and it's all because of my new crooked nose. I just want to break down and cry...I don't have any insurance or money.

Something deep
I was quite repullsed when i saw my face in a double mirror, and for about a year i was really concious about it, and im only 13. I looked for alsorts on the internet and nothing anyone said would make me think different. I used to look at people around confused at why they were so confident in themselves, so i took a whole day off school to think it all through.

After a while this is what i got to.
The confident people were the ones who hadnt discovered the double mirror or had and just tried to forget about it. And the only way i could convince myself that i wasnt some ugly thing in the double mirror was to ask myself if im so ugly why do people become my friends why am i one of the most popular kids in school. So after that i never once looked into that double mirror every again.

So advice for anyone wondering about this, forget it, dont let it rule your life. Its almost an addiction like drugs, even though u dont like it, you keep on looking.

P.S sorry for making it seem like the double mirror was some sort of enemy, but it is. I dont normally write or talk very deep. But something that can seem stupid to someone can meen the world to another person.
